Ellie Goulding cements her position at the top of the ARIA Singles chart this week with her ’50 Shades’ track “Love Me Like You Do”, the song staying for a second week at No.1 and also achieving ▲Platinum in sales on its fifth week upon the charts.
The entire top five singles all remain stable this week, with Rihanna’s “FourFiveSeconds” at No.2, OMI for a third weeks at No.3 with “Cheerleader”, Brit Awards ‘Single of the Year’ winner “Uptown Funk” for Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars at No.4 and Hozier holds at No.5 with “Take Me to Church”.
Maroon 5 move up a place to a new peak of No.6 with “Sugar”, swapping places with Sia and her “Elastic Heart”, which is down a spot to No.7, whilst Taylor Swift and her “Style” are at No.8 for a third straight week, and it picks up a ▲Platinum certification. James Bay is stable at No.9 with “Hold Back the River”, and thanks to his visit to our shores as a part of the ‘Future Music Festival’, Avicii’s latest single “The Nights” (HP-9) is up a spot to No.10 logging its third week within the ten.
UP: After leaping to No.13 last week, “Earned it” by The Weeknd holds at its peak for a second week, followed by Jessie J and her “Masterpiece” which climbs four places to No.14. Iggy Azalea and Jennifer Hudson leap up sixty places to No.15, becoming Iggy’s fourth Top 15 hit, her last being “Black Widow” (HP-15, peaked Sept 2014), plus it also instantly becomes the highest charting single for Jennifer Hudson who previously reached No.37 on the David Guetta track “Night of Your Life” (Aug 2011). Labrinth leaps back into the Top 20, up twelve spots to a new peak of No.18 with his “Jealous” track, and David Guetta with Emeli Sande jump up seventeen places to a new peak of No.20 with “What I Did for Love”, whilst another bullet comes from LunchMoney Lewis and his track “Bills”, which is up fifty-eight places to No.21 after heavy airplay in the past week. The other “Jealous” track on the charts is by Nick Jonas, and it jumps up seven places to No.24, whilst three tracks jump into the Top 30, “Up” for Olly Murs and Demi Lovato (60 to 26), “One Last Time” by Ariana Grande (51 to 27) and the latest for Sam Smith “Lay Me Down” (50 to 28). Also scoring new peaks are Pitbull and Ne-Yo with “Time of Our Lives”, up nine places to No.38, local Jarryd James with “Do You Remember” up thirteen spots to No.44 and returning to the Top 50 at No.50 is Chris Brown and Tyga with “Ayo”, up nine spots.
DOWN: The only dropout from the Top 10 is Meghan Trainor with “Dear Future Husband” (HP-9, WI10-2), but it is only down a place to No.11, and will most likely rise when she visits here soon. The first major drop occurs with last weeks highest new entry for Florence + the Machine and “What Kind of Man”, which falls thirteen places to No.29, whilst Guy Sebastian with “Linger” and George Ezra with “Blame it on Me” are both down ten spots to each to No.32 and No.33 respectively. Peking Duk and “Take Me Over” is down eight to No.37, Sam Smith drops thirteen to No.39 with “Stay With Me”, Mashd N’ Kutcher and “Do it Now” fall eight to No.41, The Avener tumbles fourteen spots to No.42 with “Fade Out Lines”, but it does achieve ▲Platinum in sales, whilst one of Sam Smith’s other charting singles “I’m Not the Only One” descends eighteen spots to No.43. “Chandelier” for Sia is down seven to No.45 and after leaping up to No.40 last week, Vance Joy and “Georgia” is back down six to No.46, with dropouts from the fifty including “Im an Albatraoz” for AronChupa (#39), “Sugar Man” for Yolanda Be Cool (#36), “Outside” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding (#42) and after debuting at No.41 last week, Jessica Mauboy drops down to No.62 with “The Day Before I Met You”.
Local DJ Timmy Trumpet lands his third ARIA Singles chart entry by debuting at No.35 with “Hipsta”, featuring guest vocals by Chardy, who scores a second entry after appearing on the Sgt. Slick track “Back on Black” (HP-69, June 2010). The three entries for Timmy have all reached the Top 40, with his last being “Nightmare” (HP-26, Nov 2014) and the first was “Freaks” (HP-3, peaked Sept 2014) which was a former No.1 in New Zealand, and it just debuted at No.5 in Finland this past week, and so far has charted in France (HP-11), Sweden (HP-6) and Belgium (HP-12) and lower down on the Swiss charts.
The final Top 50 debut of the week is new at No.49, “I Want You to Know” by DJ and producer Zedd featuring guest vocals by Selena Gomez. This is the fifth Top 100 and fourth Top 50 entry for Zedd, who was last on the charts as a guest on the Ariana Grande track “Break Free” (HP-3, July 2014), but he also has had two Top 15 singles in 2013, “Clarity” (HP-13 with Foxes) and “Stay the Night” (HP-11, with Hayley Williams). Plus it’s the fifth Top 50 and ninth Top 100 chart entry for Selena Gomez, who recently scored her highest charting single in Australia with “The Heart Wants What it Wants” (HP-33, Nov 2014).
Lower 50: Drake is touring here at the moment, and that helps his new entry from last week “Energy” to jump up eighteen spots to No.59, whilst Childish Gambino is up eighteen spots to a new peak of No.76 with “Retro”, with a third entry from last week also jumping, Chris Brown and Tyga with “Bitches N’ Marijuana” up fifteen to No.81 and up to a new peak of No.87 is Kygo and Conrad with “Firestone”. The only returning track this week is Alison Wonderland with “U Don’t Know” (HP-63) at No.83 and landing a 2x▲Platinum sales cert are The Script with “Superheroes” which drops fourteen to No.98 this week.
Klingande enter at No.56 with their second chart entry “Riva (Restart the Game)” featuring Broken Back as guest act and it follows up from the late August No.3 single “Jubel”. Ed Sheeran lands a fifth chart entry from his current No.4 album “x”, the new track features dance act Rudimental and is entitled “Bloodstream” coming in at No.58, plus it becomes his fourteenth Top 100 chart entry overall. Current UK top 5 single “Doing it” by Charli XCX and Rita Ora debuts at No.68 and is taken from Charli’s recent album “Sucker” (HP-53, Dec 2014) becoming her fifth chart entry and the seventh for Rita Ora.
Latin pop artist Prince Royce lands his first chart entry at No.80 this week with the track “Stuck on a Feeling” featuring guest rapper Snoop Dogg, plus the track samples the loop from late March 2002 No.2 single “Dance With Me” by 112. US five piece female vocal group Fifth Harmony land their first singles chart entry at No.88 with “Sledgehammer”, helped by their recent visit to our shores and their Top 20 album “Reflection” (HP-16). The final new entry to the hundred this week comes in at 93, “Young” by Seattle/Canberra based electronic duo Vallis Alps, who benefit from Triple J plays of their song.
Holding for a third week at the top of the ARIA Albums chart is the Soundtrack to the current national No.1 film “Fifty Shades of Grey”. And by holding for a third week it becomes the longest run at No.1 for a film or TV soundtrack since “Mamma Mia!” spent five weeks at the top from mid-July 2008, the last chart-topping film score was “Frozen” in May 2014 which held the top spot for only two weeks.
It’s also the second week that the No.1 Album and Single have come from the same source, with the last time this occurred for multiple weeks being back in June 2011 with Adele with “21” and the song “Someone Like You” held the top spots for seven straight weeks. In between then and now four songs and albums held the top spot for a single week for Gotye (Aug 2011), Eminem (Nov 2013), Pharrell Williams (March 2014) and Taylor Swift (Dec 2014).
That dual occupancy in December 2014 for Ms Swift was for her current album “1989”, which this week is back up a place to No.2 and after both scoring multiple Brit Awards this week, Sam Smith with “In the Lonely Hour” (newly certified 2x▲Platinum) and Ed Sheeran with his “x” are both back up two places to No.3 and No.4 respectively, whilst Meghan Trainor climbs back up two also to No.5 with her “Title” set.
The Foo Fighters started their national tour here this week, and that helps their mid-Nov 2014 No.1 album “Sonic Highways” to leap back up thirteen places to No.6 logging its eighth week within the Top 10, and the bands Nov. 2009 No.1 collection “Greatest Hits” rebounds thirty-three places to land at No.7 and it also picks up a 4x▲Platinum sales certification, for a twelfth week inside the ten.
US rock band Falling in Reverse see their third album become not only this weeks highest new entry, but also their first Top 10 album in Australia, as “Just Like You” enters at No.8 this week. The bands first two albums have also charted here, with the first “The Drug in Me is You” (HP-21, Aug 2011) and the second “Fashionably Late” (HP-20, July 2013). The self-titled album for Hozier drops down a spot to No.9 and picks up a Gold (●) in sales whilst current visitor to our shores Drake drops eight places to No.10 with last weeks highest new entry “If You’re Reading This it’s too Late”.
UP: The current national tour by Roxette sees their two album entries both climb to new peaks this week, with “The Roxbox” up five to No.12 and then “The 30 Biggest Hits XXX” up to a new chart height of No.27. Guy Sebastian continues his national tour which boosts his “Madness” album back up to No.19, whilst also touring are The Eagles, who climbs seven to No.23 with “Selected Works 1972-1999” and “The Complete Greatest Hits” up twenty-two places to No.44. Bethel Music are back up fourteen places to No.33 with “We Will Not Be Shaken”, Fall Out Boy finally rise back up, to No.35 with “American Beauty…”, whilst climbing back into the Top 50 this week are Marilyn Manson with “The Pale Emperor” (53 to 42), “The Black Market” by Rise Against (re-entry #43) and “5: The Gray Chapter” for Slipknot (56 to 46).
DOWN: After debuting at No.4 last Imagine Dragons drop down seven to No.11 with “Smoke + Mirrors” (they’ll be here in mid-March so it should go back up then), and the two other Top 10 dropouts are George Ezra with “Wanted on Voyage” (9 to 14) and Chet Faker with “Built on Glass” (10 to 16). Angus & Julia Stone see the re-packaged tour edition of their self-titled album fall back down eight to No.21, whilst The Hilltop Hoods fall seven to No.22 with “Walking Under Stars”. Now that their tour is over here, One Direction fall twelve to No.26 with “Four”, the same occurs for The Veronicas’ self-titled album down thirteen spots to No.29. “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack is down nine to No.32, “Like a Version Vol.10” falls eight to No.36, “The Very Best” for INXS is down five to No.37, but is newly certified 5x▲Platinum in sales, Nickelback fall ten to No.39 with “No Fixed Address”, Bob Dylan tumbles twenty places to No.40 with his latest set “Shadows in the Night”, “Rock or Bust” for AC/DC falls fourteen to No.48 and down seventeen to No.50 is Alt-J with “This is All Yours”. Dropping out from last weeks Top 50 are Milky Chance (36 to 59), McBusted (48 to 62), “Sounds of the 80’s” (45 to 64), Kid Ink (49 to 70), Ne-Yo (25 to 71), Beck (35 to 89) and leaving the Top 100 from last weeks fifty are Travis Collins (#26) and Fifth Harmony (#41).
US country artist Jason Aldean debuts at No.13 with his first ARIA Albums chart entry, his sixth studio album entitled “Old Boots, New Dirt”, plus as Sony just re-issued his back catalogue here, his fifth album “Night Train” also sneaks into the chart at No.97 this week. The second Top 20 entry this week is the debut album/collection of work by French deep-house artist and producer The Avener entitled “The Wanderings of The Avener”, which enters at No.17 this week and features the recent No.8 single “Fade Out Lines” (TW-42).
The third album for US hip-hop artist Big Sean entitled “Dark Sky Paradise” comes in at No.28 this week, becoming his first albums chart entry here, and a couple of places lower at No.30 is the TV Soundtrack for the show ‘Sons of Anarchy’, the new set entitled “Songs of Anarchy Volume 4”, and it features the recent Ed Sheeran track “Make it Rain” (HP-26, Dec 2014).
The third studio album and first in over seven years for Swedish indie folk artist Jose Gonzalez entitled “Vestiges & Claws” comes in at No.34 this week, whilst he has charted here previously with “Veneer” (HP-52, May 2006) and “In Our Nature” (HP-11, Oct 2007). The final Top 50 entry is the tenth studio album for US rock artist Kid Rock entitled “First Kiss”, which comes in at No.45 and is his fourth set to chart here, and his first since his seventh album “Rock & Roll Jesus” climbed to No.9 in September 2008.
Lower 50: The Preatures climb back up thirteen places to No.54 with “Blue Planet Eyes”, Ariana Grande’s new Top 30 single helps her album “My Everything” back up fourteen to No.57, the same goes for David Guetta, whose “Listen” set is back up twelve to No.60 after his new Top 20 single. Greatest Hits collections for both Guns N’ Roses (91 to 63) and Queen (90 to 65) jump back up, as do Tony & Gaga’s “Cheek to Cheek (99 to 74) and “Nevermind” for Nirvana (94 to 76), with returning albums coming from The Offspring “Greatest Hits” (#75), the just screened on TV “The Sapphires” Soundtrack (#78), “No Sound without Silence” for The Script (#92), “Blackbird” for Dan Sultan (#93), tourists The Foo Fighters and “Wasting Light” (#94), Jimi Hendrix with “Experience Hendrix: The Best of” (#98) and finally “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac (#100).
The sixth studio album for Alaskan four-piece metalcore band 36 Crazyfists debuts at No.56 entitled “Time and Trauma”, which is the bands third entry in Australia after “Rest Inside the Flames” (HP-53, June 2006) and “Collisions and Castaways” (HP-47, Aug 2010). The 15th studio album for bluesman Steve Earle is entitled “Terraplane” and it comes in at No.58 this week featuring backing band The Dukes. His last entry here was with the compilation “Side Tracks” (HP-82) back in April 2002, and this new entry becomes his fifth overall entry here (four studios and one best of). The final entry to mention is the debut set for Seattle based singer/spoken word artist Mary Lambert entitled “Heart on My Sleeve” which comes in at No.61, containing her October 2014 No.39 single “Secrets”
I'm just in shock that Broken Back is charting, it's like The Avener some months ago as random things that 392 told me about that I assumed were forever random/'insignificant'
