51. Babyshambles - Fuck Forever

50. Maxïmo Park - The Coast Is Always Changing

♫ Most of the time I don't care, but London's so far away when you are there ♫

I knew there would eventually be a Maxïmo Park song that made a list. It’s packed full of hooks and the chorus is never not a great singalong.
49. Queens of the Stone Age - Burn The Witch

♫ Ask yourself will I burn in hell? Then write it down and cast it in the well ♫

And so Queens of the Stone Age are back for another year, back when they produced albums far more regularly! This one quickly grew on me mainly for the prominent riff.

48. Tapes 'n Tapes - Insistor

♫ When you go and you're on stage, is your heart still filled with rage? ♫

Originally wound up on my 2006 shortlist after finding it on the jjj voting list, but removed it after realising the album came out a year earlier. It appears to be about a rather dysfunctional couple needing to break up.

47. Natalie Imbruglia - Shiver

♫ There's no way back, I know you'll understand ♫

My estimations for this went down slightly but my love for the pre-chorus certainly hasn’t waned. It’s probably the one part of the song that doesn’t sound too overproduced either, although my greatest memory of the song back in the day was more of the chorus. Sadly had it confirmed to me today that the song is not about banter.

46. Kanye West feat. Adam Levine - Heard 'Em Say

♫ Claiming money is the key so keep on dreaming and put them lottery tickets just to tease us ♫

Wake up Mr. West! Well and truly in the Kanye era where it was pretty normal to see pop/rock band frontmen on the hooks. Kanye’s second verse is particularly brilliant.

45. Bright Eyes - First Day Of My Life

♫ These things take forever, I especially am slow ♫

This is white guy with an acoustic guitar done right (it’s no wonder that gnash has covered it). I imagined it has most likely been in many movies & TV shows, and I was right!

44. Queens of the Stone Age - In My Head

This has enough repetition that this probably was one Triple M played in 2005, if they bothered. It was a late grower compared to the rest for me. See my review of One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” for a bit of freshly baked irony

So hard to find a good version of this but well worth the effort. It is clear that they only continued to get better at making repetitive bangers. Also, if you haven’t seen their animated film clip of this, please do.

42. Fall Out Boy - Dance, Dance

Fall Out Boy continue to channel their inner Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Hard to pick my favourite, although video game memories of this one were from Madden which I played far less regularly. This one might have it by a whisker.

41. Franz Ferdinand - L. Wells

♫ LP records in your little hands, put them on your little dansette for a dance ♫

Before I knew how much I hated Liverpool..... grrr. I can get over the “You’ll Never Walk Alone” reference because it also contains one of Franz’s catchiest choruses ever.

The full-on rocker that “Lullabies To Paralyze” probably needs more of, in the style that QOTSA know only too well. Though similarly repetitive to “In My Head”, the riffs just give it so much more power in this one. Also does anyone else hear “Love Is Blindness” or is it just me?

39. Panic! At The Disco - I Write Sins Not Tragedies

♫ I chimed in with a "haven't you people ever heard of closing the goddamn door?" No, it's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality ♫

But It's Better if You Do2005#61

I’ve always wanted to type out that lyric in full. Also if you are in your twenties and don’t remember rocking out to this one when it was big, go live your youth again pls. Still easily their most iconic and enjoyable track.

38. Kanye West feat. Jamie Foxx - Gold Digger

♫ My psychic told me she'll have a ass like Serena, Trina, Jennifer Lopez, four kids. And I gotta take all they bad asses to showbiz? ♫

This song’s success to a certain extent transcends the recognition that “Late Registration” deserves, and understandingly so, given its chart and critical success. Although Jamie Foxx’s recorded part was used only at the start, it’s also a nod to classic R&B with the sample of Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman”.

“In Your Honor” has this ridiculous second disc filled with acoustic songs. I’d be lying if I disliked all of it, but you know. I’ve always seen this has having a double meaning of either being about changing one’s life and not turning back, or being in some sort of stand-off with someone and not turning back. The internet tells me it should be the former but I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

I’m in the peculiar position of re-familiarising myself with this after being much more in touch with Missy Higgins’ cover (I would have heard this at least once a few years back though I think). In a completely different arrangement, the hooks work even better. About halfway through it unleashes and I can totally see how revered the track is.

35. Lior - This Old Love

♫ I still get that sad feeling inside to see the red tail lights wave goodbye ♫

A song so to-the-point that the title sums up the lyrical content entirely. The arrangement has always been my favourite aspect of the song, if mostly for the strings that come in at exactly the right time and the double bass that bops away in the background.

34. Mariah Carey feat. Jermaine Dupri & Fatman Scoop - It's Like That

♫ Because it's my night, no stress, no fights, I'm leaving it all behind ♫

All of the charting singles from “The Emancipation Of Mimi” were quite good but this went to another level. For once in my life though I’m saying it could do without Fatman Scoop.

♫ People got more baggage than JFK, and I'm talking about the airport man ♫

Although there’s enough wooing and wahooing to make even Granduciel blush, I still find this to be one of their most enjoyable listens. It’s such a cacophony of screeching guitars, PA announcements and crowd cheering but simply I'm all for it.

Franz draw many conclusions on “You Could Have It So Much Better”; many of which involve the protagonist being simultaneously the cause for separation and needing to do so. This song is more analytical and almost apologetic on why the relationship went wrong, but ultimately knowing that there’s nowhere further to go. Also the riffs are pretty cool.

24. Giant Drag - Kevin Is Gay

♫ Three six five, seven fifty, you're all I need, you're all in me ♫

Another one of those instant loves – thanks jinx! Although there’s not much in terms of lyrical content (they probably thought harder about the song title, given the eccentric nature of many of their others), but the guitar riff is what really draws me in. Meow meow meow.

23. The Cloud Room - Hey Now Now

♫ PPAYYYYYYYYYYYTHEBUSSSSSFAREEEEEEEEEEEE1111!!!!11!!11! ♫

With their first single, The Cloud Room struck gold. Sadly it all went downhill from there, but at least we have this incredible song. The instrumentation is so wonderful and the Brandon Flowers-like vocals are excellent too.

♫ So we stand frozen in contraband, like ornaments we break from emotional hand ♫

I had it in my head that this band would some sort of blend of Bring Me The Horizon and Battles, but if it’s any of those two it’s only a small part of the former. The chorus and bridge are both rather excellent and I wonder if it’s better than the actual song they actually recorded with Lethal Bizzle.

15. Bloodhound Gang - Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo

♫ Pressure wash the quiver bone in the bitch wrinkle, cannonball the fiddle cove (ooh la la) with the pork steeple ♫

Possibly one of the most difficult tasks I’ve ever undertaken on this site is to pick my favourite lyric from this song. Of course it’s all about sex but even before I knew what all of it meant I knew it was a song that didn’t deserve to be this catchy.

These days (unintended) the main source I enjoy “Wish You Well” is through memes, which speaks volumes of how the disparity in quality compared to this track has grown so much over time. Even this has waned ever so slightly – perhaps it’s not BOAT top 100 quality anymore – but I’m still captivated by it. Bernard strips everything back and his wonderful vocals resonate so strongly.

Otherwise known as that one time that Kapranos did his best Busta Rhymes impression and stuffed in eight minutes of lyrics into under four minutes. The riffs in the chorus sound Beatles-esque (I promise I tried to find a less snobby way of writing that in my head ) so it’s certainly something a bit of left-of-centre for them. And fittingly, it is the opening track to an equally unpredictable and exceptional album.

Outside of this critically acclaimed album with the same title, Hawley is known for collaborating with Arctic Monkeys (who beat him for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize), Pulp and Elbow. His soulful vocals combine with the beautiful string arrangement to create a beautiful track – the chorus is especially lovely. I hope you’re blown away by this as much as I am

A song so catchy that in many respects is considered the band’s second most popular song. Like their biggest hit, this is known for its rapid changes in tempo and changing focus very quickly. So simple but sophisticated and absolutely one of the reasons why I love this band so much.

2. Franz Ferdinand - Walk Away

On the soundtrack of a broken heart that is “You Could Have It So Much Better”, “Walk Away” is the precise moment where it all capitulates. The devastation of something falling apart is a key theme in the song, though the band has indicated that the Communist references are a nod to the assassin that killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (although possibly in jest). This solemn song has always stood out for me, and not just because it sounds closest to country music that the band has ever come to. Heartbreak has never sounded so good, or has it…

…nope After releasing one of the most celebrated rock records of all time, The White Stripes returned two years later with this absolute curveball. I knew this only as the theme song for a radio station show, but as only a few seconds of the song were ever played at any one time, I could never get a hold of what the song was called – despite being absolutely fascinated by it. And then eventually in my travels (specifically when going through The White Stripes’ back catalogue), this instantly clicked and became a favourite. The guitar riff is insane and quite frankly there’s nothing else I’ve come across that sounds like it. My opinion of it hasn’t changed and I still think it’s simply sublime.

Hi all, as I'm keen to keep kicking along this excellent EOY season we've been having, it's time I count down my top 100 of 2016.

From 4:30pm onwards this Saturday 28th Jan, prior to which I will be doing a half-hour pre-brod from 4:00pm. As always songs and albums will be counted down on this thread and in chat, see some of you there
Pre-brod starting now, with the top 100 starting at 4:30pm: https://myradiostream.com/station/flashplayer.php?s=s28&p=17862

2016

More so than usual, 2016 found me going back to music to keep me sane. Work, family and even leisure became stressful at times and I found that once again I make the most of my time when on my own, mostly listening to music or playing games my own way. Most people will look back on 2016 and complain about the world’s problems, the sad number of celebrities we lost, and the growing disparity that particularly politically aligned folks have with diversity, but I can’t say it was horrendously worse than any other year (although I didn’t mean for that to read in such a negative way ). I found that during the year I faced issues that challenged me to overcome my naïvety and question things more than I would blindly follow. I discovered that I’m not a totally boring sober person, albeit I still found myself well below average in my intake of alcohol compared to those around me, and happily so. But above else, after close to an entire lifetime of pain and misery, my football team won its first premiership since the middle of last century. It was an incredibly special day but was of course the one thing that stood out amongst all the other day-to-day things I now have on me as an innately reclusive 9-to-5er.

By my own admission, music was much more varied last year for me. I drew even closer attention to mainstream music, tried as much as possible to not focus too much on my all-time favourites, and the result was that I listened to pretty much anything in 2016. You’ll find that today of course, but if you know me well, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

I don’t usually write intros so there you go – I struggle enough as it is to find things to say about the songs, let alone ramble on about other stuff. So certainly don’t expect me to be able to back this up anytime soon

Also I won’t be doing any commentary on albums as I reveal them, but I would like to give mad props to the albums that narrowly missed the top 25 but deserve some sort of recognition nonetheless ~

Angel Olsen - My Woman
Autolux - Pussy's Dead
Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
Crystal Castles - Amnesty (I)
D.D Dumbo - Utopia Defeated
Drive-By Truckers - American Band
Heron Oblivion - Heron Oblivion
POLIÇA - United Crushers
Sleigh Bells - Jessica Rabbit
Swans - The Glowing Man
The Range - Potential

And lastly, as many of you would know, I’ve changed my EOY format starting from this one. Essentially I will no longer base it off my December-November period of charting songs, and that it can be any song as long as it was released during 2016. Unfortunately this means that this list excludes a bunch of songs (many of them #1s or top 5 hits) during my 2016 chart year, so I’m playing a few of them in this pre-brod section. At worst, most of these would have made the top 100. A list of these honourable mentions include:

Animal Collective - FloriDada
Autolux - Change My Head
Car Seat Headrest - Something Soon
David Bowie - Blackstar
David Bowie - Lazarus
Dumbo Gets Mad - Andromedian Girl
Grimes - Flesh Without Blood
Grimes feat. Janelle Monáe - Venus Fly
Heron Oblivion - Oriar
Jess Kent - Get Down
Kiiara - Gold
Methyl Ethel - Twilight Driving
Misun - Give It Up
Phantastic Ferniture - Gap Year
POLIÇA - Lime Habit
Pusha T feat. The-Dream - M.F.T.R.
Seth Sentry - Hell Boy
Spring King - Who Are You?
Sunflower Bean - Wall Watcher
Susanne Sundfør - Accelerate
The Dead Weather - Impossible Winner
twenty one pilots - Stressed Out
Vince Staples - Norf Norf
Wild Nothing - TV Queen
YACHT - L.A. Plays Itself

100. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Wah Wah

♫ I can feel the earth is moving, underneath my hoofed foots earthing ♫

This song is deceptively complex for a Gizzard song, and instead of going for the usual noisy riffs, here they go for a catchy hook that everyone should be able to recall after one listen.
99. The Kills - Doing It to Death

♫ Hold your horses, the light's up, can't feel it coming back around ♫

“Doing It to Death” was just the taste for what was to come on “Ash & Ice”, and it gave great reason to believe the hype. The riff is rather versatile here, not just introducing the opening verse but then forming the basis for the chorus too.
98. Ball Park Music - Whipping Boy

♫ If I become a target, will you miss me? ♫

I had to check back but it’s their first entry (post-MD, though)! A different approach to their quirks and it resulted in a simple tune that simply stuck with me as the year grew on.

After a barnstorming opening five or so minutes of “Robot Stop”, the momentum kicks on in “Big Fig Wasp”. All the “Nonagon Infinity” hallmarks are here, and this one in particular has some funny lyrics.

I only have a few songs to compare with but this comes across as a fairly familiar sound for them. The chorus was a bit risky but it pays off as it’s such a lovely moment.

Lose Control2015#62

This came up on shuffle a few weeks ago and I really have grown into it since then, so much so that I knew I had to find a spot for it on this list. The video game nostalgia that spans much of the album extends here too, as the main instrumental hook is surely out of “The Sims”.

In fairness, this did not age well for me, but nonetheless it’s a still a tune I enjoy a lot. Through all the advertisements last year this was also synonymous with the football, which as you can imagine is a link I have no recent issue in making.

I had to ultimately submit to “Skin”’s charm, and I agree with much of Australia in it being one of the most loved records of 2016. Originally I went off this rather quickly, but getting back into it for the sake of building this list came rather naturally.

Originally enjoyed this merely in isolation but then it took on a life of its own when placed in the context of the album. Additionally, I was so so happy to hear this announced on Thursday. One of 2016’s most celebrated records, but without a killer track that everyone got behind, still managed to secure the band’s first Hottest 100 entry. If quantity was a measure of success, you’d surely think it will be the first of many.

With one-third of this collaboration creating (or not, depending on your stance) one of the most amusing music videos I’ve seen in a long time, I knew this had entertainment value at the very least. Although I never latched on this during the year, repeated listens in the last couple of months have propelled it.

They were fairly close with “Holy Sick” but eventually WAAX do get that second entry. Although a missed opportunity to have a b-side titled “But Different”, at least they’ve got a chance to redeem themselves for hopefully an album on the way.

84. Teleman - Superglue

♫ I tried to shake it off, put your hands together and it feels like super glue ♫

Instantly recognisable to me as one of the catchiest riffs on “Brilliant Sanity”, although this coincidentally feels like one of their least Franz-reminiscent tunes. Builds momentum in a much more interesting way which makes it stand out even more.

When this was released I was underwhelmed that it wasn’t another “Dip”. However, similar to “Gamma Knife”, in the context of the album, this became much more significant for me. I really love the urgency of that chorus.

82. Lush - Out of Control

♫ Hold me darling I don't want to fight, too far too close I can't get it right ♫

Somewhere in my travels I ended up with a copy of Lush’s 1996 track “500 (Shake Baby Shake)”, which represents a clear contrast from my perspective. Whilst that song sounds more Britpop/’90s-era Subpop indie rock, this could not sound more like Cocteau Twins, a band that came out of a very similar era to Lush in the first place. It was truly excellent that the band briefly came out of hiatus though because this song is just so easy to adore.

One of our first tastes of new material from The Love Junkies after their amazing 2014 record “Maybelene” was this terrific tune. There’s so much to enjoy about this – the opening riff, McDonald’s vocals, the pre-chorus. Further evidence that their standing only continues to improve as a solid Aussie band.

In 2016, Kendrick Lamar released an album largely of offcuts with anonymous song titles, and it still collectively blew up upon release. Originally it was incredibly difficult to pick a standout but this is definitely it; in a way it builds up to the third verse which is one of my all-time favourite Kendrick raps. It helps that Thundercat is all over this as well.

All the butthurt st*vometal replicas and/or relics in the world couldn’t stop “Lemonade” becoming one of 2016’s most important albums worldwide. This quickly became a highlight for me as well, not just for the Ezra influence but also for her vocal delivery here, which is just sublime.

Nashville rockers Kings Of Leon released their seventh record “WALLS” in October, enlisting notable Coldplay and Arcade Fire producer Markus Dravs on production duties. This was the obvious lead single from it, with instant comparisons made to “Supersoaker” from their previous record. It’s hard to compare these two for quality but this definitely achieves what it needs to.

75. David Bowie - I Can't Give Everything Away

♫ Seeing more and feeling less, saying no but meaning yes ♫

In case I haven’t spoiled this in chat yet, although harsh I’ve ousted “Lazarus” and “Blackstar” due to their 2015 release dates. Hence I was thrilled that I enjoyed this to such an extent also, because in 2016 there were very few albums that created such hysteria. His most nostalgic piece on the record, for me it recalls so much of his work decades ago.

They trolled us even further by adding a seemingly pointless version to the title which made for a slightly fugly personal chart towards the backend of last year. At least it’s a juicy piece of tuna.

♫ Well I called mine Eliza but you wouldn't like that, I cannot try that when I'm alone ♫

Admittedly I was slightly distraught when I decided to change my EOY rules which would actively exclude “Twilight Driving”, a song which was firmly in the running. However, just prior to that rule being decided, Methyl Ethel released this one which I think I might like even better.

Their constant challenge as a group is to come back with something even more confronting than last time, and it’s safe to say they achieved that with 2016’s “Bottomless Pit”. mahhhhhhhhhhhh.

67. Empress Of - Woman Is a Word

♫ I'm only an image of what you see ♫

An essential female-sung pop tune from 2016 for me (and there were plenty of them! ), mainly for the teamwork of Rodriguez’s vocals and the solid synths. I must point out that it has cool artwork as well.

66. Autolux - Brainwasher

♫ No one can move you, I see right through you ♫

Originally my first taste of this band, after which they achieved a rather large hit in “Change My Head”, which of course was a 2015 release. Thankfully this was strong enough to crack the list as the album also deserves recognition. Although clearly not alone, the band was extremely vocal against the political movement late last year and even enlisted their fans to create the best satirical t-shirt of the new President that involved their album cover for “Pussy’s Dead”.

65. D.D Dumbo - The Day I First Found God

♫ The trees drooped down to hell, like an unused leafy vegetable ♫

I could not ignore “Utopia Defeated” forever, I guess. When I did get around to hearing it I remarked at how consistent it all was, which makes his Hottest 100 successes all the more impressive.

64. James Vincent McMorrow - Rising Water

♫ Abandoning my car about a mile from nowhere ♫

The a-c semi-hit that simply had to make this list! I can’t say I was jumping out my skin to hear new James Vincent McMorrow when this was dropped, but similar to “Woman Is a Word” it’s a straightforward synth pop track that is just so easy to boogie to. The chorus is of course excellent.

60. Your Friend - Gumption

♫ How will I know if it's easy? ♫

A song that went totally under the radar but was not far off getting to top spot in a very competitive part of the year for my chart. American singer Taryn Miller released her second album of the same title under the acclaimed Domino label (or at least acclaimed to me ), with an accompanying film clip that does well to encompass the beauty of the riffs and her vocals. This is just an outstanding jam, and I for one can really just ride out to that beat.

55. Slow Club - In Waves

♫ You can tell me you're not like this, staring down the pages of the shit you missed ♫

Even just looking at the lyrics this appears to touch upon the impact of depression on one’s life and loved ones. A rather solemn moment on the otherwise cheerful record, which conversely is titled “One Day All Of This Won’t Matter Any More”.

54. These New South Whales - Meat Hook

52. BABYMETAL - KARATE

♫ 立ち上がれなくなっても ♫

My first listen of this was on triple j where I was instantly confused. I don’t know what’s more surprising – how incredibly young the three of them are, or how endearing this became across much of the nation in 2016. Also they're the third Japanese artist to crack an EOY after the dominant forces of Polysics and Boris, which is important.

Clearly the best track from “Human Performance” and it still would be without the incredible closing verse/bridge.

It’s no longer far-fetched for Australian music’s man of the moment Flume to be rubbing shoulders with any random B-list international name, but even more admirable is how Tove Lo’s contribution works so wonderfully well here. For weeks upon weeks, this had barely made an impact for me. However, one day I heard it on the radio and then for an entire day I was out and without access to my iPod, I had nothing but this song’s chorus stuck in my head. If it had bothered me this song wouldn’t be here.

I don’t think it has been said enough, but – similar to “Skin” – “How To Be A Human Being”’s aesthetic is just irresistible. Conscious of not being left buried under the indie rock clutter, Glass Animals’ quirky brand of pop went to another level in 2016. “Youth” was a continuation of the catchy melodies of “Life Itself” and it was one that just wouldn’t go away for me.

47. The Avalanches feat. Camp Lo - Because I'm Me

♫ Never mind my tone when I told Pretty Tony, listen to my tone, you ain't catchin' a Tony ♫

The reaction to “Wildflower” was probably always going to be mixed, because some impatient fans and critics alike were always going to be skewed to find flaws in the record. Above all else, though, this track is a celebration of their return; bringing back the cheerful beats we know so well, but bringing in the assistance of relatively obscure hip hop duo Camp Lo.

46. Peter Doherty - Down for the Outing

♫ I'm sorry for the good things that I've done, it gave you hope when there was none ♫

One of the newest songs in the list as a December release but certainly deserving of a top 50 listing. This draws some similarities to the entry achieved by Doherty’s band Babyshambles, who finished in a similar position with “Fuck Forever” for my 2005 list. But of the few songs from his record I heard, this stood out as the most catchy and that would mostly be due to the excellent guitar riff.

45. Crystal Castles - Their Kindness Is Charade

♫ If you are being used, you should remain confused to keep them amused ♫

The only track on “Amnesty (I)” that wasn’t solely produced by Ethan Kath, as the duo also enlisted electronic producer Jake Lee on this one, who also goes by the moniker Sidewalks and Skeletons. It is a good way to conclude the album too because its trance beats soar above most of its preceding tracks.

I say this because this song really sticks out on “A Moon Shaped Pool” and I can’t say enough good things about it. The intro is rather pretty and then it reaches “In Rainbows” levels of spooky, of course aided by Thom’s vocals. But ermagherd the outro/bridge etc. is certainly the highlight.

43. A Tribe Called Quest - We the People....

♫ Who can come back years later, still hit the shot? Still them tryna move we off the f**king block ♫

So admittedly there were many great quotes I could have used in this track but the one above just sticks out for me because Phife Dawg’s flow is just so excellent. The only thing that baffles me is how did this album not get more recognition in Australia?

42. Cass McCombs - Bum Bum Bum

♫ The phone rang once and the line went dead, all blood runs red, white pups still bred ♫

While researching for my list the other day I read that McCombs once collaborated with an artist I knew very well… but I forgot to make note of who it was and now I can’t find it In any case this is a lovely track with a very noteworthy hook.

40. Middle Kids - Edge of Town

♫ I got all muddled up and journeyed to the edge of town, and then the world cracked open ♫

Ahhhh, Aussie music, you never cease to surprise us with these impeccable new bands. Although the bridge is a little disappointing (imo I would have preferred the song concluded at the end of the last chorus), it doesn’t take away from the rest of the song much because it’s all such a delight. The chorus succeeds on being a bit wordy which in turn helps it sink in a great melody.

39. Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - Astonished Man

♫ You don't look for me but I will look for you, without a wish to see anybody new ♫

I listened to 54 albums (apt number *.*) in 2016 which has got to be a record – of those I was rather underwhelmed by “A Man Alive”, although looking back this was mainly off the back of expecting all the other songs to sound just as awesome as this. I find this is a bit of an unrealistic expectation because of how unique this song is: a synth beat in the verses, a fascinating combination of influences in the chorus, and a beast of a guitar riff after the first chorus and the bridge.

I was more open to critically acclaimed music in 2016 and opening up to “Puberty 2” was a better choice than milk. Crazy tables attack! *.* Now all I need is for Franz and Kings Of Leon to collaborate There are very few six-minute hip hop songs that don’t overstay their welcome, but with ‘Ye and Kendrick at the helm it was unsurprising to find that this became much-loved. It’s impossible to pick out my favourite part which really is just SCARY.

In this track, Barnes talks about gender identification over the backdrop of a throbbing EDM beat. Quite late in the year this one became a massive hit in what was a very diverse top 5 at the time, and I can safely say that this now my favourite of Montreal song. OR IS IT???!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Within the space of two weeks this year we will hear from my two greatest discoveries of 2014, with Temples and Pulled Apart By Horses set to drop new records this March; the latter of which released this first taste towards the backend of last year, and effortlessly became a favourite. “The Haze” is not a bad song ftr but quite evidently I hope to hear more of this stuff.

28. ANOHNI - Drone Bomb Me

♫ Blow me from the mountains and into the sea ♫

Previous entriesYearPosition
Hope There's Someone2005#75

Two entries now for ANOHNI (three if you count “Blind”, which I begrudgingly haven’t but want to ). ANOHNI pulls no punches on “Hopelessness”, taking aim at anyone deemed responsible for the destruction of people and the environment. Not only is this album so important, but the unanimously crowned centrepiece “Drone Bomb Me” is so brilliantly delivered, both with her vocals and also the production by Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never.

This was the big sign that “Jessica Rabbit” would be a change in direction. Warping a typical Sleigh Bells riff under a restrained echoed production, alongside a chorus driven by a synthesiser, drove this totally different proposition. Uh-oh.

26. Cloud Nothings - Modern Act

♫ I want a life, that's all I need lately, I am alive but all alone ♫

I don’t mean to deliberately put that lyric up above others but yeah, this song sings to me a fair bit It helps that it’s so catchy because I’ve found myself cranking this up in the car more so than most.

What can I say that hasn’t been said already? Chance’s best verse, Kanye barely features yet drives a memorable hook, and the skeptics that laughed this off as a gospel album immediately shut up when this was dropped. Boom.

24. Warpaint - Dre

♫ Did we call it in before in the times when we were new ♫

It was difficult to determine where to place - more so than most - “Heads Up” in my album EOY because I wasn’t sure exactly how I felt about it. Ultimately I’m torn because the perfectly fine “New Song” seemingly got all the credit as the lead single when deep cuts like this were just far better. This is one of the most intriguing songs of 2016 for sure.

23. Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker

♫ I'm ready, my Lord ♫

There’s really something so inspiring about music driving someone to continue to survive, as “You Want It Darker” (the album) did for the late Leonard Cohen in 2016. A haunting opener with a two-line chorus that says it all it needs to say.

22. Bec Sandridge - You're A Fucking Joke

♫ Gotta leave this town and break these columns down ♫

Driving to work one day and desperately trying to find a free park because I’m a tightarse, this came on the radio. I knew as soon as I first heard this that it would be pushing for my EOY, but I did not know until later that it was her! There are so many amazing sections of this but I should give a shout-out to the bridge which is pure pop perfection.

20. Tanukichan - Radiolove

♫ When I couldn't speak you came, and you sang to me of pain ♫

A Company Records product courtesy of Toro y Moi a.k.a. Chazwick Bundick, Tanukichan a.k.a. Hannah van Loon makes very lovely shoegaze rock. Her debut EP “Radiolove” released last August also contained “Enough”, which was borderline on sneaking into the top 300 of this list.

By now you should already know how much I adored “More Rain” last year, but this song clicking for me was the moment the album truly entered the upper echelon of 2016 albums. So many things to mention, not the least the beautiful hook delivered from the above lyric, as well as the riff that follows the first chorus – if you love “The Adventures of Lano and Woodley”, you may hear a slight resemblance.

18. Modern Baseball - Everyday

♫ I drove back home when you got sicker, disputing claims you still held the TV clicker ♫

Much like Warpaint, an artist last year where one or two songs clearly stood out yet triple j somehow played the lesser cuts. Moreover in this instance it’s far less understandable because this was actually a single. I haven’t settled on what this reminds me of but I suppose I was hoping for better Taking Back Sunday in 2016 so I guess that’s a better explanation than nothing.

17. Drive-By Truckers - What It Means

♫ We want our truths all fair and balanced, as long as our notions lie within it ♫

I’m struggling to name more than a few country songs I actively enjoy, which is a bit unfair because I clearly don’t give the genre much attention. “American Band” is an important album and this track was not only the longest cut from it, but also the most significant. I’m not going to claim to know much about American gun laws, media bias and police violence, but this song does not hold back in its condemnation of those things. Busting the myth that country music fans aren’t always the stereotypical rednecks they are so often portrayed to be.

♫ Our lives they never seem to coincide but if it's alright with you ♫

“Look out, with the steel chair out of nowhere!!11!!” But seriously this song went to a whole new level for me for no good reason late last year, and it totally deserves this spot. I love the long intro, the falsetto vocals, and the delicious bridge.

This may form part of the reason that Danny Brown is quickly becoming one of my favourite rappers, but also that Kendrick has gone up even another level after the aftermath of his 2015 masterpiece “To Pimp A Butterfly”. Although it’s Kendrick that again steals the show all four of them distinctly do their bit.

Their Kindness Is Charade2016#45

Although not the only Crystal Castles album I own, “Amnesty (I)” was the first to make a significant impression on me. This success was even for the fact that one half of the band – vocalist Alice Glass – left the band and forced Ethan Kath to recruit externally. Thankfully, I could barely tell the difference (technically I didn’t, because I found out on Wikipedia before I got the opportunity to notice ), as new vocalist Edith Frances does a superb job here and on the record. I think I’ve mentioned this briefly before but if the outro recalled the chorus’s hook one more time, this could have been a real contender for #1.

In the band’s trio of big hits in 2016, this broke through the clutter to become my absolute favourite, even spending a week at #1 sandwiched in between two giant hits. Here it’s the synth hook that comes in after the first chorus that really brings it home, particularly when it is repeated later throughout.

More than most things, I longed for anything on “Midnight at the Plutonium” to resemble “Masochist”. In retrospect there really wasn’t, as the band has clearly moved on in sound (and now seemingly moved on altogether ) since those initial hits. However, while this sounds rather different, it was one of my most constant loves in 2016. The saxophone solo and the funky riffs mainly do it and make this their best song to date.

This song speaks of many things, but mainly how it can be so easy to accept flaws and end up becoming lazy. Around the same time of this becoming a big hit for me, ironically I found myself working harder than I’d ever worked, working 18 hour days across a number of locations for an entire week. Even when an entire day of competition was called off due to rain (M. Ward!!! **shakes fist**) I had to go back home and work from my room. I was pooped, but I was still dancing to this one.

For those playing at home, the bridge is apparently the chorus in German (I haven’t bothered to verify ). While somewhat disappointed at the (apparently temporary) departure of Nick McCarthy from Franz Ferdinand, I’m skeptical but unsure if they can ever get back to their best, which found me craving things that sounded like them last year. Teleman were the main product of that involuntary desire but it would be unfair to say they’re a replica. I really love the bridge and it stands up as one of the year’s finest moments in music.

6. Hamilton Leithauser & Rostam - A 1000 Times

♫ The 10th of November, the year's almost over. If I had your number, I'd call you tomorrow ♫

Meanwhile, I’m also sad but still slightly more hopeful about Vampire Weekend, mainly because Rostam seems to be keeping quite busy with projects such as this. He collaborated of course with The Walkmen lead singer Hamilton Leithauser and created “I Had A Dream That You Were Mine”, which is named after one of the main lines of this track. Although its chart run was not great once it dropped off top spot, I still adore it so much.

I went into total fanboy mode on the day when this was released. I was just minutes away from an important work meeting and I was just hoping I’d be able to hear this premiere on triple j in time, and I made it with mere moments to spare. Sampling the 1947 song “Bobby Sox Idol” by Wilmoth Houdini, and the actual melody from “My Favorite Things”, Danny Brown was right in stating this record would change the world when released. An inimitable record and one that deservingly was one of Australia’s favourites in 2016.

4. Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me

♫ Stop pretending I'm not there when it's clear I'm not going anywhere ♫

I branched out in different ways in 2016 to access music (see Mitski) and helped me find this outstanding track. Instead of playing the bashful card, Olsen wants everything to happen now and won’t take any excuses. I love this song in the exact same way.

3. Warpaint - So Good

I do worry that I skew late releases (or chart hits) given the past few years of my EOYs having shifted somewhat – particularly but not solely away from the dreaded points system. However, the sheer class of this song and its production gives me reason to justify top 3. I’ve also fallen in love with “Love Is To Die”, which was a moderate hit a few years ago but regrettably not an EOY entry, but I would say that this is still even better. Six minutes of lush bass riffs and thumping drums; it’s totally epic and I cannot give it enough credit.

I never seem to know what they’re singing about but that was brought even more to the forefront with this track. Who the hell cares though when it’s just so fantastically catchy? They can do no wrong however they have been very unlucky!

1. The Last Shadow Puppets - Miracle Aligner

♫ Often the humble kind but he can't deny he was born to blow your mind, or something along those lines, tonight ♫

It seemed implausible that after the flogged “Bad Habits”, that they would come out with something this good. Indeed, Alex Turner has made the EOY 20 times before with Arctic Monkeys, and not once hit #1, albeit coming close with “If You Were There, Beware” (#3 in 2007) and “R U Mine?” (#2 in 2012). But, here we are, I love it and pretty much did from the moment I heard it. A song that sings of faultlessness, of a superhero that would seemingly be able to make it all happen.

I’m thinking Yeezy would be mad at such autobiographical foresight.

Perhaps it’s Dr. Dre’s production that sells me because it makes for a very dramatic result, particularly in the verses. I love Gwen’s vocals, and I will admit that although it’s not overly essential, Eve’s verse works seamlessly in with the song.

The usual tight and robotic Interpol riffs surround this track, which instead of making it sound like a generic Interpol track, help set the platform for one of their most special tracks. The bass riff is on a Daft Punk level of funkiness, I just love it.

Or “on axis”, apparently. Though it’s easily the most repetitive track on “Franz Ferdinand”, this is compensated for in that there is nothing else that sounds like it. Driven largely from a simple piano riff and on the idea that a partner has been hard done by. Towards the end of the track the story is flipped “on its axis”, so to speak, when it turns out that the protagonist has also been driven away.

The Scottish five-piece were seemingly not around for long but this was the third of their three top 50 hits in the UK. It’s also the most memorable for me, remembering this from Rage from many years ago mainly for the artist name. Craig Macintosh’s vocals turn out to be rather noteworthy too, and make for a very neat chorus.

43. Modest Mouse - Float On

♫ We both got fired on exactly the same day, well we'll float on, good news is on the way ♫

Last.fm tells me that I heard “The Show Goes On” before this, but I’m still not totally convinced of that. It doesn’t take much to convince me, however, that this is rather superior. This isn’t quite on Franz’s level but it’s one of the most prominent mid-‘00s alt-rock hits that I can really get behind.

Even the less significant tracks on their debut album stand out in isolation. The riff not dissimilar to “Bullet” released nine years later is so intense, and it doesn’t take much to sound great amongst everything else. Aptly succinct as well.

From aptly succinct to aptly epic and really quite long. Made up of five movements, the song follows a structure they have attempted on a couple of other occasions but never got quite right after this. Their angry newly-found politically influenced stories combined well with the desire to create what is essentially a punk rock opera. As a single it only peaked higher in Denmark and the UK, so good job Australia.

39. The Panda Band - Sleepy Little Deathtoll Town

♫ The boys just want the girls to settle down, in my sleepy little deathtoll town ♫

I dare you to not find this song so overwhelmingly cheerful, your jaw begins to detach from the rest of your face. Possibly an exaggeration.

Back in the day when many rock bands churned out genuine mainstream hits instead of the very few we see now. Green Day’s title track to their 2004 record “American Idiot” was fairly universal in appeal and to this day it’s still not hard to see why. I did get over this era of Green Day for a small while but it’s great to revisit my childhood with this track.

35. 2Pac feat. Elton John - Ghetto Gospel

♫ Those who wish to follow me, I welcome with my hands. And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold. And peace to this young warrior without the sound of guns ♫

Shakur’s posthumous release “Loyal to the Game” was made up of unreleased recordings from the early ‘90s, with additional production added on mostly by Eminem. The Elton John sample makes this such an oddball hit, which is partly why I love it so much.

New Yorkers Interpol started their 2004 record “Antics” with its most emotional offering. Very euphoric and memorable riffs and Banks’ vocals are once again so easily identifiable.

33. The Fiery Furnaces - Straight Street

♫ Tea time at Damascus computer café, I'm looking busy and staring off the other way. Arsenal, Inter; Madrid vs. Valencia: I'm over-hearing all their nonsense in extensia ♫

I have officially come full indie rock circle. “Eleanor Put Your Boots On” (my #63 of 2005) is a lovely staple in Franz Ferdinand’s catalogue named after Eleanor Friedberger, who once dated Alex Kapranos. And, as sheer coincidence, this whopper from Eleanor’s band The Fiery Furnaces has become one of my favourite discoveries in preparing this list. It’s a beautiful mix of wacky baroque pop, rhythmic grunge riffs and quirky vocals and while I understand how it is so polarising, I cannot resists its strange charm.

Just six months after the charm of “Black Betty”, this was something that really caught me surprise. That the content was so far over my head was beside the point, because it was a composition that even then I knew was something rather unique. It would be remiss to not make particular note of the synth lead-in to the chorus.

I’m not sure how this is possible given the emotional impact it has closing the record out, but I love it too much on its own to care. Chassagne’s vocals battle with the strings and riffs to sound more aggressively beautiful, and in the midst of all that it’s easy to ignore the lovely lyrics as well.

The even more elusive Mr. Fantastik is most definitely not on Twitter, and is very keen on calling out others in the game that brag about their felonies. His chorus steals the show and makes for a fantastic slice of hip hop that I am so thrilled to have discovered.

THE rocker on “Funeral”, because there had to be one, but even then it stays so true to what the album is trying to do. This song also has credited writing to Josh Deu, who originally formed the band with Win Butler but left in 2003. Butler sounds like he’s screaming down a tiny tunnel or something, I don’t know.

So it turns out I don’t love this that much more than Australia but of course that means little when in 2004 voters instead preferred William Shatner’s bizarre “Common People” cover and Scissor Sisters’ pedestrian “Take Your Mama”. This is one of Franz’s stricter songs in terms of structure, but compensated by having one of the more redeeming rocking choruses in their catalogue.

So they’re not out of the woods yet but no top 10 yet for The Killers! I shun those who don’t give “Hot Fuss” the credit it deserves – this is just as punky and arty as the less commercial big bands of the time. Like most of Australia this was my first taste of the band and it has always been a rewarding track. They earn the same position as “When You Were Young” two years later.

Another one that was hard to place because I’ve always had this in my mind as one of U2’s all-time finest, and it still is. A deserving Grammy winner for Song of the Year in 2006, beating the likes of Mariah Carey and Bruce Springsteen. Bono dedicates the track to his father, noting in the video “I wish I’d known him better”. It’s a cohesive belter of a ballad and the final chorus is the neat little bow the build-up deserves.

My decade-long love affair with this bizarre recording of alternative hip-hop / dance is mostly formed from The Impossible Quiz series, which as I hinted previously in my commentary was something that dominated a brief moment of my high schooling years. In terms of their singles discography, I always maintain this song is somewhat neglected, even despite it sneaking into the top 50 of the Hottest 100 and having a decent chart run in the UK. It is a more accomplished and entertaining recording than “This Fire” in my view, with much of this boiling down to the KILLER riff.

Up until my last year of high school, we did have one decent computer in our house but it was Mum’s so I did not frequent it often in the early days. However, as I got closer to my later years of primary school & early high school I made a more conscious effort to explore music on the internet. We had a deliciously popular program (which should not need much introduction if you are at least my age) that enabled me to listen to many more of these songs without being hindered by our relatively poor internet speed. I do recall having this one among the other “Franz Ferdinand” singles but not paying too much attention to it because it wasn’t the main two that I knew a lot better. It wasn’t until after purchasing “Tonight”, and then purchasing their other two records they had out at the time, that I appreciated this track for what it was.

This song is about as chaotic as Franz Ferdinand got until “The Fallen”, and this is proof that they can pull off the messy punky rocker with relative ease.

Like a good book that you can come back to time after time after time and continue to get out the same entertainment value. Except that I don’t read anywhere as many books as I should.

I have written plenty about this song and none of it should surprise anyone who knows me well. My original BOAT placings of this will always amuse me; in one early 2010 attempt this was #21 behind 4 other Franz Ferdinand songs and 2 actual Linkin Park songs (almost as egregious as “Black Hearts (On Fire)” being in the top 50 of this list) My second effort just a couple of months later had it at #4 behind only “Black”, “Ulysses” and “Knights of Cydonia”, which so far isn’t too hard to argue with, except that I know this is better than all three of those. I officially changed my mind on that in my slightly more official 2011 list when this was placed at #1 and poor “Ulysses” dropped out of the top 10.

What this highlights quite clearly to me is that I knew early on in my a-c days that I loved Franz Ferdinand, but it took me almost a couple of years to realise that this song is still streets ahead of what they would come up with later on. I knew of this during primary school, though not exclusively through Rage like so many of the nostalgic hits I have in this list. It was largely in the middle part of the year where I can’t recall watching as many countdowns, but I remember it from video games and plenty of radio as well. This and “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” (and, to a lesser extent, “Last Nite”) were some of the few indie rock tracks I connected with as a youngster, which of course expanded rapidly upon getting into music later down the track. I’m now an unashamed stan that loved this song so much that I went to a concert of theirs and caught (and wrestled for) a drumstick which to this day holds pride of place in my room among my many participation trophies and shelves of albums. More crucially though, the song helped me comprehend that music (even more to the point – popular music) doesn’t have to be a set structure of roughly verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus (or a variation of) – I argue that this too helped me evolve my understanding of music at what was a formative and crucial time. It’s raw, unrelenting, catchy, accessible, revolutionary and tightly performed all at once. This band totally transformed my music taste into what it is today, which of course would not be the case without this song.

So one could suggest that it’s a pretty important song for me.

Not at all surprised with the Franz domination, and of course not upset either. Take Me Out is a worthy number one. I'm very pleased The Killers managed four entries, and almost made the top ten. One more chance, I hope they can do it! Gwen Stefani is a pleasant surprise in the top five, and I also love how well Missy Higgins did. I also like entries for Evermore, Green Day, Modest Mouse, The Polyphonic Spree, Eskimo Joe, Grinspoon, My Chemical Romance, Deep Dish, Nelly/Tim McGraw and Kaiser Chiefs. I also surprisingly like the two Snoop Dogg entries, and even more surprisingly, I've somewhat come around on Black Betty. Great list!

All I'll say is that this is a bloody special year for me. Nostalgia played a small part - I purchased my first ever LP that wasn't a dodgy compilation. But it's the discoveries I've made over the years since then that have made all the more special. Totally self-indulgent but I've been anticipating making this list for quite some time.

It's fitting that I get to commence my commentary with this band. During this EOY process I did my absolute best to not over-inflate my love for "Meteora", but for those unaware this was the first ever album I bought. I had only just turned 9 years old, and had recently purchased a really cheap CD player for my own. We were in the final stages of building our family home at that time, so I went with dad to the house one night to stay over while he was finishing some things. It was entirely unfurnished, and all I had in my room was a copy of this album, a mattress and the CD player, and I gave the album its first spin while enjoying my new surroundings.

Now onto the song and it's one that I didn't really enjoy much at first compared to the bulk of the record, but when it later became a single it grew on me quite considerably. It's a refreshing electronic sound from the band and proves they not just proficient at robotic nu metal riffs. 2003 me would have said ya joking shoulda been higher.

49. The Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism

♫ And you can tell from the state of my room that they let me out too soon, and the pills that I ate came a couple years too late ♫

Having only known "Coin-Operated Boy" for many years, it's funny how my enjoyment for that track has been completely dampened by getting into this one. It's just far more engaging and rompous musically and lyrically.

MF Doom opens up very honestly telling us he has nothing to do with Madlib and if you skipped after 25 seconds, or completely ignored their many collaborations including a particular LP released a year later, you'd be right. Taken from Madlib's "Shades of Blue" record which sonically resembles what The Avalanches were doing just a few years before. Sampling Donald Byrd's track of the same title which contains some utterly superb vocals.

47. The Offspring - (Can't Get My) Head Around You

♫ Deep inside your soul there's a hole you don't wanna see ♫

Previous entriesYearPosition
Hit That2003#85

Coming from the same album that brought you the radio-friendly (read: flogged like a motherf**ker) "Spare Me The Details", the far better singles surprisingly holding up many years later. In my head I've always likened it to The Living End's "I Can't Give You What I Haven't Got" which was to finish 20 places lower in my list the following year.

46. The Herd - 77%

♫ Captain Cook was the very first queue-jumper, it was immigrant labour that made Australia plumper, enough is enough, whiteys go pack your stuff, don't wanna live in England? That's f**king tough ♫

Damn I can't get any of these number songs right!! Johnny H makes his debut appearance in my EOY, can't wait for his '90s bangers to smash it. So far ahead of its time and incidentally one of the other few Aussie hip hop artists to make such an impact on me after this chronologically was Butterfingers. Context is of course the hook here is sampled briefly in "Figjam". I'm not an overly political person but it's hard to argue against them here. It says a lot when a newspaper article written about the song at the time dismisses it by labelling "the singer's sweeping accusation that most Australians are racist" (lbr, the lyrics are not entirely untrue) and otherwise just complains about the swearing. Straya.

While this one isn't quite as redeeming, it's hard to not be captivated by it all. Oh yeah and soz not soz for it being another long one.

Oh crap my 2011 review was still online until just typing this now - I suck In short, for those who haven't stuck through "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" in full (yes, all 135 minutes of it), this not only summarises André 3000's side of the album fairly well, but the line "I think I'm in love again" is the way I feel every time I chuck it on.

43. Britney Spears - Toxic

♫ Too high, can't come down, it's in the air and it's all around ♫

Primary school me is getting increasingly outraged but this is a banger of Bunnings sausage proportions. The chorus is pure pop brilliance.

42. David Bowie - New Killer Star

♫ All my idiot questions, let's face the music and dance ♫

Previous entriesYearPosition
I Can't Give Everything Away2016#75

Admittedly my knowledge of all things Bowie is pretty ordinary but works released between '80s-'00s is lacking in particular. Therefore it may enrage some people when I say this is easily in my favourite 10 Bowie songs, but then he's one of the few reasons I am looking forward to the '70s lists if I ever get to them.

I may not listen to much Powderfinger these days but it would way too harsh to deny that "Vulture Street" was full of great tracks. I did have this fairly high in my best songs of all time of course, but it's still packed full of enough riffs and hooks to give it classic status.

40. Kelis - Milkshake

♫ Damn right it's better than yours, I can teach you but I have to charge ♫

After this, "Trick Me" and "Millionaire", Kelis was not to impress me much until 11 years later with "Jerk Ribs". Of course this being a Neptunes production helped this take the world by storm.

39. Linkin Park - Faint

Somehow at the time I thought I was one of the few people who liked this song until I realised it had a pretty decent chart run. It was also my favourite Linkin Park song for quite some time because I had it down as the album's ultimate rocker.

One of Muse's most delicate songs but with such a magnificent melody to carry it along all the way. Bellamy's outstanding vocal ability is a standout in this spacey jam.

My relationship with Placebo has been challenging over the years, as my initial dislike for anything that Triple M flogged to death made it hard to appreciate what the band does well. However, this is just thrilling stuff with the hook being one of their most memorable moments ever as a band.

Little Birdy aren't for everyone, and they certainly weren't for my mum as I remembered once when I was young a song of theirs came on Rage and she remarked how much she hated the vocals. Despite being quite a renowned actress, randomly Rosario Dawson nearly made my 2010 EOY as well, providing vocals to Kasabian's "West Ryder Silver Bullet" which unofficially finished #132 (for that year specifically) after my mid-decade mess. When the beat kicks in on this track I absolutely lose it.

29. The Karminsky Experience Inc. - Exploration

♫ Well I look at it myself as the beginning, really, as an exploration, that's the reason you're exploring, you don't know what you'll run into on an exploration ♫

What is this smelly mess you ask? Well I quite liked playing Cricket 2005 on the PS2 back in the day, not just because I loved playing as Namibia but also that it was the first (and to this date, controversially only in my opinion) cricket video game with somewhat realistic gameplay. In other words, as I'm generally rubbish at video games, this was a cricket game where I could actually bat out fairly decent scores and not get frustrated and go for the slog, and inevitably get out! The soundtrack was a nightmare at the time despite recently becoming more acquainted in Thievery Corporation. That is to say, outside of this particular song. Somewhere along the line though I again stumbled upon this track (possibly after revisiting the game) and it dawned on me that this was pretty irresistible in a strange way. The production is pretty wonderful and the drum/bass riff combination is pretty exquisite.

27. Basement Jaxx feat. Lisa Kekaula - Good Luck

♫ Enjoy your nightmares honey, when you're resting your head ♫

In any normal year this song would be around 10 places higher, but you know, 2003. Sadly we've been trained to assume that songs like this must have sampled something from decades ago because original vintage-sounding songs can't sound this good, can they? The only thing better than American soul singer Lisa Kekaula's afro are her vocals, which complement the massive orchestral build-ups perfectly.

The music video makes perfect sense because, at least at this very particular point in their life, Outkast were basically The Beatles. Hahahaha the "Elephant" Pitchfork review is so out of touch and pretty much sums up my distrust for the website in general. This monster sits in the middle of the tracklisting as a conduit between the previous three quieter tracks and the mayhem that would unfold in the five to follow it. As far as seven-minute-plus blues rockers it does a pretty exceptional job, all the while taking its sweet little time about it.

You could say my copy of this album is slightly worn (https://imgur.com/a/YZhJv ) What I loved about the liner notes for this album is that each track had a "notes" section which was essentially a paragraph explaining the background and process behind each track. It then surprised me that the notes on this one were the shortest of any of the tracks, and that this song was one of the most seamless recordings coming together very quickly.

This year the news of Chester Bennington's passing was of course felt worldwide and for me my memories of celebrating this song and its brief top 10 status really came back to me (just quietly, what a top 10: http://australian-charts.com/weekchart.asp?year=2004&date=20040125&cat=s ). This song still does wonders.

22. The Rasmus - In The Shadows

♫ Sometimes I feel like going down I'm so disconnected, somehow I know that I am haunted to be wanted ♫

And not long after "Numb" left the charts, I had a new rock track to stan. With the exception of their hit making abilities in their home country of Finland, The Rasmus are pretty much one hit wonders and their "Dead Letters" record is pretty uneventful outside of this track. It evokes very similar euphoric feelings through the hook as "Numb", although its riff is slightly more rewarding.

So far you've heard all about how I loved "The Love Below" but Big Boi's side of the record had its fair share of highlights; none were greater than this. Mello and Lil Jon surprisingly drive the majority of this track, with not much information being available on the former (apparently he featured on two tracks on The Underachievers' 2017 album, assuming it's him).

15. Starsailor - Four to the Floor

♫ No cross to bear, no reason to care, my life was all up in air ♫

I get the first say on this very important piece of business: this version is infinitely better than the Thin White Duke remix and nothing will convince me otherwise. Outside of this one, Starsailor don't appear to be the biggest post-Britpop band outside of the UK, but can at least be thankful for the song's success here. It was at the absolute peak of my interest in watching the top 50 countdowns on Rage so it was quite a thrill to see this push as high as it did.

One of the more formulaic offerings on "Elephant" but it does not suffer in quality for it. In fact, Jack White really wears his influences on his sleeve here as it's no secret he loves old American blues rock. It's also pretty wicked that this was one of 5 tracks from the album that made that year's Hottest 100, even if of course it would have suffered from the old ya joking if I was at least 6 or 7 years older.

Not as heralded as other singles from the debut album, partly because it preceded "Take Me Out", but also as it wasn't promoted much outside of the UK as far as I can tell. A lot of love for the band initially came from this album, and although I first heard this back in 2009, it quickly became a favourite. At the end they declare "my name is super fantastic, I drink champers with salmon", which perhaps is why it is best kept in German in the song.

So much was my admiration for this album was that by the time I got to this track, I was lost for words how it could all be consistently excellent. In addition, only "Curls", "Nørgaard" and "Happy Well Adjusted Psychopath" have made my EOY before and have been shorter than this one, so it's fair to say it makes a huge impact in all of its 108 seconds. Interestingly the song is made up of three rhyming limericks (followed by a repetition of the final line), and it's this rigid lyrical structure that helps sink in the melodies and make this one of the band's most memorable tracks in their entire catalogue.

Remember what I said about "Mr. Brightside"? Multiply that by 10. It's hard to contextualise this song among their others, even on their most popular album, because it not just defined the public perception on The White Stripes, but also on rock music as a whole. The opening riff that repeats throughout has stood the test of time in that regard, and its tune has become the inspiration for many sporting chants and chants of other kinds. As early as 2006 it was used by the Italian national football team, something which gave the band a great sense of pride. Since then it has been used by Scottish, English, German, English and American sports teams as well as being the goal anthem for Australian team Melbourne Victory (also happens to be my club of choice!). The beauty of this track happens to be that all of this fame has derived from a bass riff not even made by a bass guitar, and such is the ingenuity of Jack that they can make a genre-defining track in such an unconventional manner. Although I've tried to explain my love for this I just can't, and not just because my writing skills are so subpar, but its universal popularity makes me think of how everyone loves it, and as such I don't really have as much from a personal perspective about it.

But despite all this, my connection with this song is stronger than ever; after all, it is the opener for "Elephant", which happens to be an album I like quite a bit.

Once my final year of high school was over, I went on quite a musical journey, more than making up for my relative inactivity in the months throughout 2011. It culminated in learning a lot more about Yeah Yeah Yeahs, a band I knew were quite good, but had never acquired sufficient evidence to prove just how good. This has been the ultimate slow burner, somewhat because it sat towards the end of the "Fever To Tell" record which took me months to wrap my head around. However, once I had done so, even this song started to click with me after really loving "Pin" and several others. The moment this actually clicked with me was when I was inevitably coming home from a long day of uni via an even longer commute (around the time when it felt like my attention went from The White Stripes the year before to Radiohead as the albums I grew to love at this stage were the likes of "In Rainbows", "OK Computer" and "Kid A"). However this was soon added to the mix and as I've matured this track has particularly aged magnificently, and I can safely say that I love it even more than "Pin" and "Heads Will Roll", something which would have quite surprised 2012 me. Although the guitar tones somewhat continue into the next track "Y Control", it's here that they make their most remarkable, heartfelt impact.

It would not be far-fetched at all to call this my favourite Radiohead song not on "OK Computer" however "Nude" could (I say could, I can't call it now after hours of typing commentary ) easily have its measure. Nonetheless, this album did not click with me much when I first heard it and in fairness still doesn't much. If not for the three tracks in today's countdown, I'd have it down as their worst album by some distance. To prove my point even further, it's funny that I remarked in my initial review "The Gloaming" was a highlight instead of this, a song which upon reflection I don't particularly care for. But the album is not all doom and gloom, heck this is #4! It did take months to make an impact on me and once it did, it's those guitar riffs that make the majority of the difference. After two verses and choruses each, the outro produces a truly stunning riff. This song, like many across their discography and like the band itself, doesn't have much to compare to, and it's another reason why they're one of the all-time greats.

3. The White Stripes - Little Acorns

♫ And she thought, if that squirrel can take care of himself with a harsh winter coming on, so can I. Once I broke my problems into small pieces I was able to carry them, just like those acorns, one at a time ♫

Mort Crim is an American anchor which apparently inspired Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy character, and he provides the interesting introduction to this absolute roundhouse of a track. Proof of the album's impact on me was through my shitposting-before-shitposting-was-cool attitude to expository essay writing in Year 12 English, where we had to come up with external references to help back up vague arguments about identity and belonging. Among a random British India song and a number of other media, the simple message behind this track made this an easy choice to roll off during exam time. Understandably it could never be a single but its creative approach is enough to make it such a powerful statement for me in an album already full of surprises.

2. Outkast - Roses

♫ I know you'd like to think your shit don't stank, but lean a little bit closer see roses really smell like boo-oo-oo ♫

Just legendary. It only occurred to me in 2013 that I didn't have it in my collection, and after soon discovering that iTunes didn't have an explicit version I knew it was a good excuse to buy the record (pretty good call in hindsight!). But unlike most in the top 10 here, this dates all the way back to the time it was released, or more accurately in this case in mid-2004 when this debuted at #2 in Australia (luckily I can forgive Spiderbait). How this isn't remembered - let alone celebrated - anywhere near as much as "Hey Ya", while I get the reasons why, it's just not good enough. I'm almost never critical of triple j in fact but in this instance it's somewhat of a travesty that this didn't get the recognition it so rightfully deserves.

The organs, Big Boi's hard-hitting verse, the more than memorable chorus, and perhaps most of all 3000's unforgettable vocal delivery. This song rules.

Words have eluded me before and I really should be writing more here but I really can't say enough about this. It's the unluckiest #2 ever.

1. The White Stripes - The Hardest Button To Button

♫ I had opinions that didn't matter, I had a brain that felt like pancake batter, I got a backyard with nothing in it except a stick, a dog and a box with something in it ♫

And yet, while I've grappled with the decision between these two songs for several years, my ultimate choice makes the most sense.

First I'll talk about the music video because it's not as critical to the main narrative but it's quite noteworthy. The style of the video is pixilation animation, wherein the illusion of movement is created by multiplied drum kits and guitar amplifiers. If you haven't seen it, go and check it out, and while you're at it you might even stumble across The Simpsons' parody of it, which has to be one of my favourite moments of that show too! (also Beck makes a cameo in the music video giving Jack a "box with something in it")

The riff epitomises what "Elephant" does so, so well. Their stripped down style doesn't sound like much on paper, but - and I know how dumb and obvious this sounds but it has to be said - in their capable hands it amplifies the impact of each instrument. Meg's drumming dictates the pace of this track because of how much space everything has to move.

While this wasn't the mainstream hit like "Roses" was, it is similar in the sense that I remember it being quite good but not caring much about it because before I gave music as much as attention as I do now, the only track The White Stripes I had time for - like most - was "Seven Nation Army". But it was definitely 2011 when I first heard and then grew to love this album that became a classic song. While it's an easy thing to say when talking about an album that I love, it also happens to belong in the best part of the album - from it to "Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine" are five tracks that I've always held in among the highest regard and ultimately they're five of the highest eight tracks on the album on this list.

I may or may not decide to redo my BOAT someday but I'm pretty comfortable with where I sit with this album now. It's my favourite song from my favourite ever album, so that has to count for something, right?
Yes to Hilltop Hoods, Powderfinger, Dandy Warhols, Jack Johnson, Dido (nice surprise there!), Kylie Minogue, Blink 182, Jet, all the Muse (here is as good a place as any to mention them!), Linkin Park, Britney, Outkast, The Rasmus, Starsailor and Missy Higgins. Some absolutely great songs in there.

All this White Stripes domination in the top ten. I've never delved too far into their music because what I've heard has never grabbed me. I've always liked their stuff but nothing has ever gone to the next level.

Unlike the song that just scraped into the top ten which you may or may not be aware that I like a little bit. Great to see it there!
