* #36 (LP#2) - Lil' Boat 2 by Lil' Yachty is the US rappers follow-up to his May 2017 debut set "Teenage Emotions" (HP-62), with the first "Lil' Boat" being a mixtape from March 2016, this set features guest such as 2 Chainz, Quavo, Offset and Lil' Pump amongst its seventeen tracks.

* #47 (LP#2) - Tearing at the Seams by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats is the follow-up to the band self-titled debut from 2015 (HP-19 here) and overall is the fifth album released by Nathaniel (solo or in a band) since his first in 2007.

* #49 (LP#6) - Outsider by Three Days Grace is the fourth Top 100 entry and second to hit the Top 50 for the Canadian rock band whose self-titled debut set reached No.47 here in May 2004, while their last entry here was their fifth album "Human" (HP-63) in April of 2015.

* #58 (V/A) - Exile: Songs and Tales or Irish Australia by Various Artists is a 21 track compilation of songs performed by such local acts as Shane Howard, Paul Kelly, Pauline Scanlon and Leah Flanagan.

* #82 (LP#11) - American Utopia by David Byrne is the fifth albums chart entry here for the former Talking Heads lead singer, his last set to chart here was back in February 2009 when his album with Brian Eno entitled "Everything That Happens will Happen Today" reached No.66.

* #85 (LP#1) - Year of the Tiger by Myles Kennedy is the first solo album for the former Alter Bridge guitarist who has so far scored two No.2 albums as the lead singer with the Slash band Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators in 2012 and 2014.

Gotta say I'm looking forward to when the GP realises new music is still being released in 2018
I've added this week's ARIA Top 100 Singles chart entries to my site.

Hear them all here - http://top100singles.blogspot.com/2017/12/every-aria-top-100-single-in-2018.html
Gotta say I'm impressed by how well Calum Scott's album is doing. It debuted at #5 on ARIA and is still at #7 on iTunes. Pretty good for a one-hit wonder

I will say that at least there are 9 different Australian tracks in the top 40 airplay charts right now (think it got down to about 2 or 3 last year), but radio really needs to do better
From my viewing point, the finger should be pointed at streaming services. Radio is a slave to what's popular. And they really gage that popularity from the charts. (and yes I know radio can influence listeners, but in the end if they aren't playing what's 'popular' audiences will tune out apparently). Today's charts is driven by streaming services whose lists are strongly influenced by American popularity. It isn't radio's fault that there wasn't an Australian act to hit #1 last year, it was streaming faults. I know streaming can't go away, but I think the ratio for streams needs to be reduced for the charts until streaming services become truly local. It's not just here being affected, I've observed the same effect on the UK chart - especially with acts that are purely UK popular. I;m not saying get rid of streaming (I've accepted its not going away) but I do think the ratio needs to be changed in Australia to help Aussie artists crack the charts.
I don't want the ratio for streaming changed because total units will look super low and things like certs and end of decade charts will be screwed up
Given streaming is a huge part of the music market, its ratio shouldn't be changed at all. Moreover, if 175 streams brings the same revenue as one sale, then it should be counted as one sale, which is ARIA is doing. Changing the current ratio would corrupt the chart.

I doubt streaming is to blame as no Australian act topped the digital track chart in 2017 either. They did slightly better digitally last year than on streaming but nothing spectacular either.

I agree though that Spotify needs to include more Australian acts on their top playlists and that radios should respect quotas.

However the lack of success from Aussie acts may simply be due to the fact that the GP doesn't really like the current Aussie songs quite simply.

Moreover, the lack if success of Aussie acts in the ARIA chart isn't something new. I've been following charge for 14 years and the number of Aussie songs in the Year End Singles Chart has always been fairly small.

(long post incoming, sorry!)

Yeah I definitely agree Billy that radio upping their game isn't a catch all solution to the overarching problem considering the large issues with streaming in terms of promoting local content. The way I see Spotify's main problem, is that it's like if iTunes had the same store front in every single country. This isn't totally accurate because if I go to Spotify's new releases right now, Kwame & Vancouver Sleep Clinic are right at the top and I imagine they aren't in other countries. But still all of that is tucked away, and they continue to promote international content that has no interest at all in meeting our quotas. Rap Caviar is the 2nd biggest playlist on the whole app in terms of followers, and I'm certain it has a sizeable Australian listener base, but they're never going to put a Hilltop Hoods or Bliss N Eso song on there, gotta keep room for domestic abuse suspects & convicted pedophiles after all

What bugs me about radio's attitude is that they have no interest in breaking artists through. If Vance Joy, Peking Duk, Guy Sebastian, Jess Mauboy etc release a new single, there's a good chance they'll get insta-added to radio because they've proven themselves as hitmakers and don't sound aggressively different to what's in vogue, but for anyone that hasn't taken off (or isn't in vogue), it feels like they often have to fight against radio. Pnau had the biggest Australian hit of 2017, but radio took their sweet time getting on board with it even though they only had 1 Australian track in the top 30 airplay at the time (which was Starley's big international Spotify-aided hit that feels like it just *happened* to be Australian). So they only really feed the wealthy, and as a result I can only think of the top 2 from The Voice who made their chart debut in 2017 and also cracked the top 50...very briefly.

What's especially frustrating is that it's very clear that, actually as it turns out, radio are far less reliant on the charts than what they once seemed to be. There's been plenty of discussion certainly in the US how Pop radio seems to play an idealised (read: gentrified) version of what they seem to want to be top 40, but actual top 40 is a wild warzone that they can't seem to adapt to. The same thing happens here. Lady Gaga's "The Cure" was in the top 40 airplay chart a good 2 months after it had left the ARIA top 100, but meanwhile Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE." was one of the 10 biggest songs of the year, and it only barely scraped into top 40 airplay, and probably would have missed it completely if not for triple j's outlier contribution to the airplay chart. Just this week, Drake's current 7 week running (soon to be 8) #1 single has already been shoved aside on Aus radio in favour of the Noah Kahan song which is not in the ARIA top 50, nor is it Australian to justify it. I've been hesitant in the past for being too judgemental on radio playlists when they've been questionable since I always felt they do have an obligation to follow the charts to a T, but that illusion has been very much shattered now so I'm prepared to scrutinise it further.

As for audience reception to Australian music, the funny thing about it is that we're in a perfect position for that to not matter remotely. It's abundantly clear that Spotify have a massive passive audience who for some reason will click shuffle on a curated hits playlist and not skip a single song (doesn't help that Spotify seem to intentionally game the charts by turning free users into a figurative botnet to bolster the numbers of stuff they're pushing), so I don't see why they couldn't just put more Australian music in it. I also really do believe that audiences want to hear Australian music and will definitely rally behind it, but they're just not hearing any of it, or it's only coming from the same names over and over again. Even if they don't seem to, it can't be hard to indoctrinate people to it, 4ZZZ, triple j etc show through their countdowns that their audiences enjoy Australian music very much in proportion to how much the stations play it, and there's no reason it can't be the same on a larger scale.
However I will say on a positive note that I do think Spotify AU became aware of this issue late last year, and I've noticed that Hot Hits Australia (the playlist that has the most Australian listeners) has had a considerable boost in local content on the playlist. It used to average about 4 or 5 (which were almost always in the same vein as the radio's easy answers, Peking Duk, Vance Joy, Dean Lewis etc) and now the 50 song playlist has 12 Australian tracks and 3 NZ tracks, which includes some yet-to-break artists like GLADES (who might have an entirely Spotify assisted top 50 hit very soon) or Robinson. It's unfortunate that there's such an international homogenisation on the national charts, but progress is being made to counter it I think.
I also think a reason is Australia's lack of artists that are big outside of Australia. Since nearly all of these playlists are made internationally they usually only feature the biggest artists in the world. If Australia had some artists that were massive over in the USA then maybe that would improve their performance over here as well. However Australia doesn't really have any massive artists besides from maybe Sia. And we can't use population as an excuse as Canada have heaps of massive artists (Drake, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes) despite them only have a bit of a bigger population
Genuine question hijinx: What makes you so sure that people don't skip songs they don't like on Spotify, aside from the fact that they're part of popular playlists?
It's hard to say for sure, but I've noticed that when songs get added to specific playlists, there's always a baseline playcount boost that they ALWAYS achieve. I suppose though it's possible that the skipping is so normalised that there's just a baseline skip count of its own that cancels out. Maybe if there it is noticeable, it's on those big polarising singles like Filthy, Look What You Made Me Do, Perfect Illusion, which always get dumped quickly due to bad reception, but it's hard to get a read of them because it all happens too suddenly. It doesn't help that it only takes 30 seconds listened for the stream to be counted, easy to not hit the skip button in time even if you wanted to in a lot of circumstances.

Admittedly though I'm inserting my own interpretive bias of seeing Spotify being used as background playlists, or how it seemed like the norm for people posting their 2017 Spotify rewind pics had their annual skip count only in 2 digits.
