Forum - General: Forum Games - Quick List Vote Game Pt. 7 (Brackets)

Part 6: http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=52166

This whole shindig has been going for over a year, but if you're new to it all, let me briefly explain: Quick List Vote Game (or QLVG for short) is a 5 stage voting game that takes place across a fortnight. The aim is to take a list of 100 songs and eliminate the bottom 20 songs per voting each round until there are just 20 songs left and a winner is crowned from that. Voting is done by selecting some 25-40% of the remaining songs each round and submitting it to my memo inbox before the voting deadline, which comes up at 6pm on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays. Scoring in each round works as simple: regardless of how many songs you vote for, your #1 vote will score 40 points, and each subsequent song will score 1 point less, going down to #40 votes in round 1 scoring just 1 point. With each new round, you are free to adjust how many songs you wish to vote for (as well as the order), either for strategy or personal reasons, so long as it complies with the range that is set for that voting round. If you miss a round of voting, your previous round's votes will be re-used with a 20% penalty (so your top vote will get 32 points, #2 gets 31.2, etc), and your vote will consist of as many of your previously voted songs as possible, provided it doesn't go over the limit. This means that someone who voted 25 songs in round 1, could potentially be made to vote for 25 songs again in round 2. The 20% penalty stacks upon successive rounds. Meanwhile, to grant some purpose to your earlier votes, from round 2 onwards, I take 25% of a song's total points scored and add them to the total for the next round. In the event of a tie in points between two eliminated songs, if possible the tie will be broken by the number of (active) voters, and then the top vote received for the round. If that is not possible, the songs will be considered tied for ranking purposes. If this happens on the cusp of the elimination line (eg two songs tie at #80 for round 1) and the tie cannot be broken, all the tied songs will proceed into the next round, barring an extreme circumstance where there are somehow more than 20 songs scoring 0 points. In the interest of fairness, I will always lock in my own vote before the game begins, and I will be unable to adjust the order or proportion of my vote after that.

The list of songs included in each game is determined through a number of ways. Generally speaking, the songs will have to match a pre-determined theme, or feature on a certain list of songs that has been chosen. Typically, the theme will be chosen by a vote between multiple different themes, and from that, a voting process takes place in the Qualifying thread to determine the 100 songs that will compete in the next round. These Qualifying rounds typically open up on the Tuesday after a new QLVG is posted.

In this tale of short titled songs, we have two of the shortest things on the list kicking it off. They're also the only songs to get less than 20 points on what is a high scoring first round. Going back to their 1st album, Cog have "Run" at #100, followed by the first of two U2 tracks here, "Bad" at #99. Things then get considerably more recent as we've got 2 tracks that are in the ARIA top 50 right now. First Shawn Mendes with his Khalid collaboration, "Youth" from his just released self-titled album. Then with no small help from Mark Ronson & Harry Styles, King Princess with her first single "1950" at #97. Finishing things off is The Drums with their only Hottest 100 entry, "Money" at #96.

Daughter belatedly made the ARIA singles chart just once with "Youth" which lands at #95. Going instead to the UK Chart, the breakthrough hit for Le Youth, noted for heavily sampling Cassie's "Me & U", "C O O L" takes #94. Rustie teams up with Danny Brown for monster banger "Attak" at #93, while we continue this streak of 2010s tracks just a little longer with The Lumineers' biggest hit, "Ho Hey" at #92 and The 1975's excellently titled "UGH!" from their not-so-excellently titled 2nd album at #91.

The 2010s run makes it to 10 in a row, with Snakadaktal's "Air" at #90 and another artist who has released an album this week, A$AP Rocky with "L$D" at #89. Ending that streak is The Smiths with one of the last songs entered into this round, "Panic" at #88. There are two pure pop songs from roughly the same era called "Crush" that I'm sure people have mixed up in the past. Both of those songs are in this game, and the first to go out is Mandy Moore's at #87. Lastly, the god of hell fire himself, Arthur Brown has "Fire" at #86.

Speaking of having two tracks in the list, here's the first of Macy Gray's two, which you won't be surprised to know is "Still" at #85. Troye Sivan gives us another recent single with "Bloom" at #84, while AC/DC go way back to the Bon Scott days for "T.N.T." at #83. Dami Im's #1 chart hit and X Factor coronation song "Alive" takes #82, while finishing off is not one of the big 3 Sex Pistols songs, but instead a deeper cut in "EMI" at #81.

I have just realised tonight that I wasted a perfect opportunity to save myself some time and get truly meta with incredibly short commentary. But as if to make there not much to say, we start things off rather sparse with Lorde's first album cut "Ribs" at #80. It's followed by what might surprise you as being by far The xx's most streamed song on Spotify, and surely a front runner if we had an extremely cursed intro songs round, as "Intro" lands at #79. Rest assured though that things get larger than life next with the Village People's enduring "YMCA" at #78. At #77 is Iceland's finest post rock exports Sigur Rós with a track from their 2012 album. Then also from 2012 and going for a completely different vibe is Flume, with one of the big hits on his debut album, "On Top" at #76, reversing the digits on its Hottest 100 finish.

Loaded with hits was Gwen Stefani's first solo album, one of which is "Cool" which lands at #75. Speaking of loaded with hits, there aren't many better examples than twenty one pilots' latest album because every single track on the album has been certified at least gold in the US. Going several times platinum however is "Ride" at #74. Back to debut albums we've got Ariana Grande following up her top 20 finisher from the last game with the next single "Baby I" at #73. The Rolling Stones are considerably less modern in this set with "Angie" at #72, while Katy Perry has what was despite a late year release, the biggest seller of 2013, with "Roar" at #71.

One of my greatest fears in this game has been the counting of the two different "SOS" tracks in this list and not accidentally misattributing them. My job has gotten considerably easier now that ABBA's "SOS" goes out at #70. It leads off a reasonably acronym heavy set, given that it's followed directly by Dua Lipa's "IDGAF" at #69, and a little lower we have the artist formerly known as Eves The Behavior with "TV" at #67. In-between is Kasabian's biggest hit, "Fire" at #68, and not The Goo Goo Dolls' biggest hit "Slide" at #66, I imagine if you keep following this thread you'll get to find out what their biggest hit is, which must be exciting.

If you were ever wondering what the man said to the other man in Radiohead's "Just" video, I can now tell you that he said that the song would come in at #65 in a QLVG round 2 decades later, do what you will with that information. Tinashe is back for the 2nd time in 3 games, this time taking "Flame" to a still respectable #64. Cold War Kids have their very belated first top 50 hit "First" at #63, while my old school's church's favourite secular song, "Hands" by Jewel comes in at #62. I've never looked personally, but it's only natural to assume that inside those hands would be bones, and The Killers' song by that name is the last to be cut tonight, landing at #61.

In a rare round 3 instance, every song has at least 3 voters on it so don't be surprised if you take some heavy casualties today. Starting things off is one of the longest titles in here, made shorter by way of acronym as System Of A Down's "B.Y.O.B." lands at #60. And in the world of insanely good branding, The Cars' "Drive" is at #59, being defeated by their mortal bicycle enemies as "Luna" is ahead at #58. Going back to their debut album, Camp Cope have "Done" at #57, while Killing Heidi have their Spider-Man soundtrack hit "I Am" at #56.

The song most committed to this premise, Kendrick Lamar's 1 character long "i" lands at #55. It is the black sheep in a set of otherwise only 4 character songs. Frank Ocean has his biggest solo hit "Lost" at #54, a similar thing that can be said of Feist whose Sally Seltmann penned "1234" takes #53. One of the last songs to be added to this list, Sam Brown's "Stop" finishes near the middle at #52, while Travis just miss the top 50 with their just narrowly top 50 hit "Sing".

Incidentally the top 50 starts off in a big way with 3 different #1 hits spanning roughly a decade. Firstly Lighthouse Family with their monster adult contemporary hit "High" at #50, and Macy Gray tapping a similar demographic for her biggest hit "I Try" at #49. Going a bit more modern is Jessica Mauboy's "Burn" (though scarily it's nearly a decade old at this point), which leaves I believe 8 #1 hits in the running. Architecture In Helsinki cheat the system by shortening their title even though they don't need to, as "It'5!" lands at #47, while Gary Numan carries the torch for his vehicular friends as "Cars" takes #46.

One of the most obscure songs in this whole list but still showing strong, PAWWS lands at #45 with "Sugar". Of considerably higher notoriety is Matchbox Twenty, with the biggest single on their biggest album, "Push" landing at #44. Ever the musical chameleon, Childish Gambino takes a more chill vibe on his track "Sober" which lands at #43, but then sits alongside the king & queen of chill that is Beach House, whose slowly climbing "Myth" just falls short of the next round at #42. Lastly we have a bit of a crash for U2 whose "One" started in the top 20 but misses the top 40 at #41.

Appearing for the second time this year, Spandau Ballet improve on the #51 finish for "Gold" and take "True" to #40. We also stay in the '80s just a little longer as Michael Jackson's "Bad" is #39. The rest of these tracks have consistently landed in the 30s, James taking "Laid" to #38, while Little Mix have the first of their two tracks here with "Touch" at #37. Alicia Keys also appears here with one of her biggest chart hits, "No One" at #36.

Next up is an entirely 21st century section. Stacie Orrico's only top 10 hit "Stuck" takes her to #35, sitting next to recent album releasers CHVRCHES, who go back to their debut for "Gun" at #34, it remains to be known if my "Stay The Night" review was successful. 2003's Hottest 100 runner up "Hey Ya!" lands at #33 followed by 2004's runner up "Scar" at #32, while Interpol have the slow crawl up of "Evil" ending at #31.

Two regulars on that whole catalogue chart thingy I do up next, with Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" at #30 and Adele's "Hello" at #29. One of Birds of Tokyo's best selling tracks, "Plans" lands at #28 behind yet another artist who released an album last week, Snow Patrol, whose 2004 album netted them a breakout hit "Run" at #27. Lastly a song I obviously can relate to as someone who often spends my late nights alone inputting data into spreadsheets, Matchbox Twenty have "3AM" at #26.

Kelly Rowland started this game off in the top 20 but her final round berth was "Stole" and now we'll never know how much higher than #25 it could have gotten. Making for strange company is Jamie xx whose "Gosh" landed much higher than I expected at #24. Tears For Fears' only Australian #1 single "Shout" is another to fall out of the top 20, finishing at #23. And there's more in that, as Beyonce's "Halo" also takes a hit down to #22. Jury is out on whether or not Radiohead could be considered more lucky as "2+2=5" has a big boost up to #21, but misses the final round by half a point.

For another curious statistic, the most streamed song from 2006 in the UK last year was actually "Naïve" by The Kooks, a song whose popularity persists and manifests a top 20 finish here. Speaking of persisting popularity, Taylor Swift's "1989" album is in the ARIA top 10 right now, and from it we've got "Style" at #19.

Little Mix lost a song last round and they were very lucky not to do it a second time with "Move" just sliding into the top 20 when needed. It keeps climbing just a little more to finish at #16, sitting alongside The Smashing Pumpkins who initially had a top 10 berth in sight, but slip down to #15.

Back for the second time we finally discover what that most popular Goo Goo Dolls song is, and wouldn't you know, it's "Iris" at #14. And if you know anything about eye anatomy, you'll find that it is especially fitting for the iris to be next to "Black", which sees Pearl Jam reaching #13 this time around.

In order to unite any potential UK citizens reading this and the more likely AU citizens, I present to you a set of two songs of which one you will recognise as being a #1 hit. It's also a continuation of last round's set of songs that were all just falling out of the top 20 at a bad time, as Gorillaz & Rihanna both fall out of the top 10 for the first time with their respective songs.

But hey, it means more space for those who replace them, and it means in this case that half of the top 10 is by Australian artists, a fair effort. Starting off is one of the best climbers of the contest, with George's "Spawn" ascending 28 positions from where it started to end up at #10, while some might think I'm ready to riff on "Ubu"'s lyrics again, but why? It comes back a second time this year to finish in the top 10 again, this time 2 places lower than in the Hottest 100 game at #9.

More Australian now, as the masters of making songs that I vaguely remember from growing up, The Mavis's, have their biggest hit "Cry" landing at #8. It comes along with the much awaited other "Crush" song of the game, which wouldn't you believe it, is Jennifer Paige's #1 hit version of the song title, a strong performer that falls slightly to #7 in the end.

The run of '90s music persists, which makes me realise that the entire top 20 are from the past 3 decades. Contributing to that in this post is Bic Runga's respected-for-restraint "Sway" at #6, and Mariah Carey's respected-for-lack-of-restraint "Hero" at #5.

Finally now coming across a #1 sitter, which for the first three rounds of this game was in fact MGMT's "Kids", which does quite well to come very close to #3 when it has a whole voter less than its competition. But then some might say it's even more impressive that Max Sharam has made it as high as #3 with "Coma", not just for being her moderately deep cut moderate hit, not just for the fact that it's not in fact a collaboration with Perth based Pendulum covering the Melbourne based Pendulum song "Coma", but the fact that no one even put her in their top 4 this round.

The competition is begging for me to be exceedingly pluggy, because as it so happens, the runner up this time around is a song that was in fact first released in the year 2000, which just so happens to be the theme for a broadcast that I will be conducting on Sunday. And who can say whether or not a certain Eminem song noted for giving a name to an entire community of music fandom that we all love and hate, could perchance make an appearance in such a thing? Well it has made an appearance in this list, landing in the runner up slot, ironically behind a song that is noted as peaking at #2 on the charts both here and in the UK, while "Stan" hit #1 in both places. Evidently the adversity caused by the lack of signal boosting that #1 status provides is not enough to stop Natalie Imbruglia from scoring a #1 finish with "Torn". This is only the 2nd time she's ever appeared in this game, and the last one was about 2 years ago with the same song, which finished at #14 in the game of '90s top 10 hits. With a 60 point lead this time around, there's no question that she sails away with the latest game, nothing to be cold and/or ashamed about.
Thanks for voting and all that. In fact this was especially good for me because we nearly went the entire game with no missed votes, which allows me to type these things up slightly sooner. I am also thrilled to say that for the first time this year, there's finally been a draw on the strawpoll so I can go 4 weeks without having to come up with new options. Next week we'll be doing the antithesis of this game as we have 5 word titles in the qualifying game, followed by the much more simple ARIA #1 hits game. Before that though on Monday, we'll have the game concerning parenthetic song titles, see you then, and do the ACI if that's a thing you do.
After much waiting (3 days to be exact) we have a (new) QLVG game that is (in fact) ready to be seen (and voted upon). This is the (very) exciting game that involves songs (which involve brackets in their titles), and there are 100 of them (below this message).

You can't say we don't offer a variety of options here. Starting things off here in a big way is a US #1 hit from The Temptations, "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)". It of course shares company with Australian comedy musician The Bedroom Philosopher, with the lead single from his album all about passengers on Melbourne trams, "Northcote (So Hungover)" at #99. The Strangler's debut single "(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)" is at #98, and following that is a posthumous release for Gurrumul which gave him his first ever #1 album. For a hit that more people may be familiar with, we've got Frankie J & Baby Bash's top 10 hit "Obsession (No Es Amor)" at #96.

Staying in the 2000s a bit longer but with a different tone, Felix da Housecat's electro banger "Silver Screen (Shower Scene)" lands at #95. Then we've got another massive early '70s hit as Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)" takes #94. We've then got a bygone era where immensely successful UK rock bands decide against mimicking the title of a Ben E. King song (hi Oasis) as The Clash have "Train In Vain (Stand By Me)" at #93. The cuts get even deeper as we go to a non-single from Kylie Minogue's 2nd album, "I'm Over Dreaming (Over You)" at #92, while George Michael heavily samples "Flawless" by The Ones, and to my surprise getting a higher chart peak in the process, with "Flawless (Go To The City)" at #91.

Why, you're looking for more comedy music from around the turn of the decade between the 2000s & 2010s that landed in the Hottest 100? Well you're in luck because we've got even more of that courtesy of Flight Of The Conchords with "Too Many Dicks (On The Dancefloor)" at #90, followed by a band which they have directly parodied before, Pet Shop Boys at #89 with "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)" at #89. Back when Rihanna was specifically trolling me with her sample choices, the world was given "Cockiness (Love It)" which lands at #88, followed by the very interesting "Madam Butterfly (Un Bel Di Vedremo)" from Malcolm McLaren at #87. To keep your pop at its artiest (I say this unintentionally while listening to "Arty Boy") we've got a recent track from Frida titled "Everything (Is You)" at #86.

Though it feels like it's been quite a while to me, "Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)" in fact comes from Silversun Pickups' most recent album and lands at #85. On the other hand, you have to go quite a way back in The Killers' discography to reach "Bling (Confessions Of A King)" at #84. Also assuring that we have 3 decades of comedic alternative hits represented in this set of eliminations, we've got TISM's "(He'll Never Be An) Old Man River)" at #83. Comedic (to me) for unintentional reasons is Cashmere Cat's eclectic "9 (After Coachella)" at #82, while Fall Out Boy finish things off with their song that Video Hits always cut the full title off, for some reason, "I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You)" at #81.

This is being posted *slightly* before it should be, but rest assured that everybody who voted in round 1 has put a vote in, and I'm definitely not doing this to ensure a favourable result as will be clear towards the end of this elimination round, I'm just very low on sleep right now and would rather post this now than in several hours from now. Anyhow with that out of the way, the first two songs to go out of here are tracks that are more often seen without their parentheses, some might call them half-bloods. Some might also call them "Breakeven (Falling To Pieces)" by The Script and "L.A. Song (Out Of This Town)" by Beth Hart. From the very lucrative in terms of hits soundtrack to Furious 7, at #78 we've got Sevyn Streeter's "How Bad Do You Want It (Oh Yeah)" at #78, followed by another 2010s track, with one of The McClymonts' few ARIA charting singles, "Going Under (Didn't Have To)" at #77. Checking out relatively early is blink-182's "Dammit (Growing Up)" at #76.

I was going to make a remark about how things aren't going super well for the '90s currently after coming out on top in the last game, but that's because I forgot that Brandy's "Right Here (Departed)" is actually far later than that, landing at #75. Custard however are pure '90s instilled, and their track "Girls Like That (Don't Go For Guys Like Us)" sits at #74, behind the first of two Florence + The Machine tracks, "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)". If that's not enough of the letter F for you, we've got two F artists collaborating on a song with a parenthetical F word (not that one), with Fifth Harmony teaming up with Fetty Wap on one of their best songs, "All In My Head (Flex)" at #72. Stacie Orrico returns for a second game in a row, this time with "(There's Gotta Be) More To Life" at #71, just missing out on doubling the position of "Stuck".

Get your yea-yeahs out for Rihanna as "Cheers (Drink To That)" is her second song to land in this list, at #70. Following that we've got the particularly wordy, even for Shania's standards, "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!" at #69. A big '90s hit, but some might argue not quite as big as Bryan Adams' "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" which sits snugly at #68. That '90s run can't keep up but it is there in essence, as Run The Jewels team up with Rage Against The Machine's Zack De La Rocha for "Close Your Eyes (And Count To F**k)", and if that's not enough rap rock hybrid for you...wait, don't go, anyway, Cypress Hill are also here with "(Rock) Superstar" at #66, which some might argue is not the first time this month it has appeared on a list that I have posted on this site.

Lindsay Lohan comes in at #65, I believe the first time she's ever appeared in this game, and with her highest charting single, "Confessions Of A Broken Heart (Daughter To Father)". Then at #64 is another top 10 hit, the first of a series for the surprisingly successful grouping of Bloodshy & Avant aka two guys from Miike Snow, with Galantis's "Runaway (U & I)". Not remotely close to a top 10 hit, we've got a 2018 entrant from Moaning Lisa with "Carrie (I Want A Girl)", rest assured we do in fact have a Florence still to come in this list. Speaking of multiple entry artists, there's The Whitlams at #62 for the first of two times with "Buy Now Pay Later (Charlie No. 2)", while we finish things up with another sort of supergroup, pairing up The National with Menomena and singing about members of the Minutemen, EL VY just miss the cut by 1 point with "Return To The Moon (Political Song for Didi Bloome to Sing, with Crescendo)".

There are 60 songs left in the running, so if you've done the maths, or are acquainted enough with this game to know the proceedings, you'll know that I require a Top 15 to 24 vote by 6pm on Monday. This time I will probably be a tad late on the results as I have an exam that afternoon, we'll see I guess. Also the ACI is open as per usual.

Forgive me if I choose to be laconic today. Starting things off is perhaps the most contentious sitter here, with all 3 parts of Stevie Wright's "Evie" at #60. At #59 is Good Charlotte with a song that I thought was only big in Australia, but in actual fact was one of their biggest hits in the US as well, though they never reached the Hot 100 after it, "Dance Floor Anthem (I Don't Want To Be In Love)" at #59. Using brackets to great effect is the Beastie Boys with "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" at #58, while Talking Heads take "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" to #57. Finishing off is 3LW not committing to one hook in the title, giving us "No More (Baby I'ma Do It Right)"at #56.

Currently finding success behind the scenes for Shawn Mendes, Teddy Geiger's own "For You I Will (Confidence)" lands at #55. The Doors are no longer able to "Break On Through (To The Other Side)" and land at #54, while Freemasons have an end of decade hit in "Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)" at #53. On the other hand, we go right near the beginning of the career of Something For Kate for "Captain (Million Miles An Hour)" at #52, as well as relatively early times for U2 with "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" at #51.
#50. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Hopefully providing some satisfaction for The Rolling Stones as they land just in the top half at #50, while The Whitlams land their highest at #49 with "Blow Up The Pokies (I Wish I...)". AC/DC have the height of pessimism in this game, though incidentally have their highest ever finish with "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N Roll)" making #48. Nelly Furtado has "Powerless (Say What You Want)" with no relation to the discographies of Texas or Rudimental at #47, while My Chemical Romance take I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" to #46.

The Wombats have their ode to 'boring tokyo' with "Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)" at #45, while Otis Redding is content to be "Sittin' On The Dock (Of The Bay)" wasting time at #44. Things get immensely timely as we have entered World Cup season during this game, and that's long enough to reach the exit of Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)" at #43. Five For Fighting have "Superman (It's Not Easy)" at #42 while R.E.M. close out the round with "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)".
We're now down to this list of 40 songs, check a look

THIS ISSSSSS the story of the round 4 results of QLVG, which I can only imagine were deliberately organised so I could start the post like that since Nine Days' "Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)" lands at #40. If your appetite for extremely wordy hooks is not yet satiated, there's also Ne-Yo's "Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)" at #39. In a round largely of songs from the start and (so far) end of this century, Lady Gaga sits in the middle in more than one way with "Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)". You no longer need to wait to find out that Future Islands are #37, while James slightly outperform themselves in last fortnight's game, as "Getting Away With It (All Messed Up)" lands 2 places higher at #36.

Silverchair take "Ana's Song (Open Fire)" to #35, while next up is Rihanna with a song I initially thought would make the top 20, "Only Girl (In The World)" at #34. A strong contender for the most bloated metadata is "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)" at #33, while Jessica Mauboy keeps up her standard top 40 performance with "Pop A Bottle (Fill Me Up)". The Fray finish off this set with a song that subverts the typical functions of titles, with the more obvious hook being the non-parenthetic portion.

Taking a bit of a hit this round is the still surprisingly high (for me), "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" at #30. Radiohead have been pretty consistent in this game with their two songs, which have never switched order once, though finish very close to each other, with "Exit Music (For A Film)" at #29 & "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" at #27. In the middle of this is a very formative song from my early teens, Sarah Blasko's "[explain]" at #28, while speaking of people who are known to be caught up in the middle, Groove Armada team up with Mutya Buena for "Song For Mutya (Out Of Control)" at #26.

It is a bad time to be an artist that starts with the letter A! At the very least Arcade Fire can take consolation in having an additional song still to come, but it's the end of the road for "Rebellion (Lies)" at #25. Australian Crawl's "Reckless (Don't Be So)" manages #24, while Adele's "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" is having its 3rd run in QLVG, but highest ever finish at #23. It's actually the first time "Swimming Pools (Drank)" has ever appeared, and it does well to land at #22, just behind Jamie xx who is exceedingly unlucky yet again, just missing the last round with "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" taking #21.
I present the top 20

A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far Away)
Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)
Blu Cantrell - Hit Em Up Style (Oops!)
Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't Have)
Christina Aguilera - Come On Over (All I Want Is You)
Cutting Crew - (I Just Died) In Your Arms
Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love)
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
Florence + The Machine - Spectrum (Say My Name)
Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
John Parr - St Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)
JoJo - Leave (Get Out)
Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories - Stay (I Missed You)
Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)
Regurgitator - ! (The Song Formerly Known As)
Spiller feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)
Train - Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)

But who shall win (with further specifications)? We shall find out (provided you look at this thread) in 2 days after 6pm Friday. Submit your Top 5 to 8 selections here to make an impact on that, and also possibly the ACI if you do that.
Are we supposed to/encouraged to comment in this thread or is it just for results?

Ooh, first time I've played in every round in ages so it's nice to see a lot of my faves still in the running. So there must be at least 4, possibly 5 other people supporting the same songs I am.
Yep, anyone is free to comment in this thread haha.

Starting things off we've got pure '00s teen pop by some of the youngest artists of their times, with Christina Aguilera as yet another 'they just released an album' artist to appear here, going back to 2001 for "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" at #20. And then we've got JoJo's "Leave (Get Out)" a song that is now roughly as old as JoJo was when she released it, at #19.
#18. Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)

The run of 'just released an album' continues, and this next one was with much less expectations, but that is of course the way of Beyonce of late. You could say though she was still having unexpected hits a decade ago too though, as "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" was initially just a b-side to "If I Were A Boy", and lands at #18 here. Sitting alongside her is a completely different taste of things from the Buzzcocks, with "Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" at #17.
#16. Florence + The Machine - Spectrum (Say My Name)

Though Calvin Harris was more prone to scoring #2 hits at the time, for Florence + The Machine, getting a reworking from him in "Spectrum (Say My Name)" was their key to a #1 single in the UK, and a #16 finish here. Something similar could just be said of the fact that "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" became a defining hit for Green Day while being a relative departure from what the band were known for at the time.
#14. Train - Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)

Sparing me the trouble of having to acknowledge a parenthetic portion that I never go out of my way to include, as a winning song, Train finish off at #14 with "Drops Of Jupiter". Sitting next to them is a song that once shared a space with them in the ARIA top 10 (for a grand total of 1 week), Blu Cantrell's "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" at #13.
#12. John Parr - St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)

Those who choose the radio station when they drive have no doubt been waiting for the surprise success in the mid game of John Parr's "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" which finishes at #12. Making a similar charge for success is Arcade Fire's "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" which finishes off at its highest position of #11.
#10. Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)

#9. Regurgitator - ! (The Song Formerly Known As)

A breakout success for Stock Aitken Waterman was the boisterous "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" by Dead Or Alive which is another big improver to finish in the top 10. Meanwhile while some songs here use the parentheses to append to their main hook, or otherwise clarify, Regurgitator do neither with what is arguably their most popular song "! (The Song Formerly Known As)" at #9.
#8. Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories - Stay (I Missed You)

Round by round: 17-09-10-11-08

#7. Cutting Crew - (I Just Died) In Your Arms

Top Vote - #1

Until 2013, the only independently released single ever to go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 was in fact Lisa Loeb's "Stay (I Missed You)", which for the sake of people who enjoy numbers lining up, was at one point #9, but for the sake of people who want the song to finish higher, ends up at #8. Continuing a strong run of '80s hits in the list, Cutting Crew's "(I Just Died) In Your Arms" finishes at #7.
#6. Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)

#5. Spiller feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)

Surprisingly ousting "I Will Always Love You" in recent years as Whitney Houston's strongest catalogue seller/streamer, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" which finishes at #6. Following that we've got Spiller's "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" at #5, a song that in round 2 actually managed to have 10 different voters, which I don't believe has happened in a long time. Incidentally that was also a round when it was ousted from the top spot.
#4. Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)

Round by round: 05-04-04-08-04

Points - 319.11

#3. En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love)

Round by round: 03-01-02-03-03

Points - 338.34
Current Voters - 7
Top Vote - #1

For the highest 2000s track this time around, we actually go to the gospel pop stylings of Mary Mary with "Shackles (Praise You)", which has previously finished at #8 & #25 but now gets quite a bit closer to the top as it takes #4. On the topic of songs which have appeared in this game twice before, it's not quite new heights for En Vogue, whose "Don't Let Go (Love)" has previously finished as a runner up. Nonetheless it's still a fine finish at #3.
#2. A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far Away)

Round by round: 08-06-06-02-02

#1. Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)

In the end though, it's the battle of the early '80s new wave. For the runner up, we've got the one that actually did reach #1 on the Australian charts, with A Flock Of Seagulls' immensely catchy "I Ran (So Far Away)". It put up a strong fight but lost out the undeniable synth goodness of the Eurthymics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)", arguably their most popular song now even though it was "Would I Lie To You" that took them to the top here. It's what you voted to the top this time around and who am I to disagree?
As usual, I thank you all for voting, especially this time around which was the biggest turn out I've had in some time, and I came close to running out of space on my spreadsheet as it's set up currently Nonetheless, a lot of these titles were quite lengthy and there'll be even more of that, with a lot of songs that could have appeared here too, as we'll go into the world of songs with 5+ word titles. I also have no new poll but can tell you the next qualifying game will involve Australian #1 hits. Have a nice weekend and I'll see you then.
Thanks Hijinx, I enjoyed that round and am very pleased with the results. Even the songs that I didn't vote for and are not my cup of tea, I can appreciate and there was nothing horrible in the finals.
