Last edited: 25/05/2023 05:19 With heavy and sad hearts we advise the passing of Joy McKean OAM. Joy passed away peacefully last night with family by her side after a long battle with cancer. She will be remembered as a pioneer in Australian music. Joy McKean was a multi-award winning songwriter and musician who wrote many of her husband Slim Dusty’s most famous songs and won the first Golden Guitar awarded at the Tamworth Country Music Festival for ‘Lights on the Hill’. Her musical partnership with Slim produced over 100 albums, sold over 8 million albums and earned 45 Golden Guitars. Joy was Slim’s manager, ran the business and most importantly loved and raised the family. Joy is survived by her children Anne Kirkpatrick and David Kirkpatrick, 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

Last edited: 18/10/2024 03:47 One of my early mentors, and a pioneer in Australian discographies, the author (and originally musician in the 60's) Noel McGrath passed away this past weekend (Oct. 25th, 2024) at the age of (almost) 74 from stroke related issues. He was the author of the first ever compendium on Australian music, "The Australian Encyclopaedia of Rock" which was first issued in 1978 and updated again in 1984. An in-depth look at Australian musical acts from the 1950's through until the 70's, then updated for the early 80's, all with biographies and discographies. That was the edition I discovered it in my school library when doing research, and that's when I found a book with Australian chart info in it, something which I had never seen before, as I was a fledgling chart enthusiast at the time having only been studying them for a few years by this stage. In the early 1990's Noel was selling the publishing rights to his book, and in 1992 I bought them, then I went on to update the book into the 1990's, but the publisher I was with took three years to get it together, and by then it was the mid 90's and much of the info needed to be updated again, so I did a quick update, but the publishers again dragged their feet, wanting to do a CD-ROM version of the book, then they went under and it never eventuated, but I still have the rights to the book.
^ What formed the contents (i.e. which chart/s) of Noel's book? Adding to Ollie Olson's discography above: Third Eye Singles: 15 May 1995 New Life ARIA #198, 4 weeks on chart. Albums: 10 February 1992 Third Eye ARIA #163, 1 week 7 June 1993 Ancient Future ARIA #168, 3 weeks
Nugs; Noel went through the charts for each state and combined then into his own national chart info (before Kent did them), with a staggered points system per population density. When I redid the book in the 90's, I went to Sydney and copied down the Aussie acts in the Kent 50's to 70's Top 100 Singles Charts so that they would be consistent, as quite a few entries were missed out in the original books.

Australian performer Chris Doheny died in a car accident on 21 or 22 September 2025...aged 64. He wrote ch 9 AFL Show theme song 'More than a Game' and was lead singer for band Geisha (had a few hits in the mid-80s including 'Part Time Love Affair').
I knew Chris when he lived in the Dandenong ranges in the early 90's, after Geisha, before his Footy Theme and during his 'All the Young Dudes' group in 1991.

Effy, it is correct
I believe bulion's info is from AMR. ARIA would be 27-Feb-94, #17, 22 weeks.
amended and added to for Jimmy Cliff.
Australian stage and screen legend
Toni Lamond has died, aged 93.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-15336879/Toni-Lamond-dies-aged-93.html Toni Lamond only had one hit single in Australia - which was a cover version of the Dionne Warwick hit "Silent Voices (La Voce del Silenzio)", which peaked at #95 in Australia in 1969.
Funk & r'n'b star Carl Carlton died Dec 14, 2025 aged 73. Biggest Australian hit was his 80s cover of "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'"
