It's a new year but not much has changed. Seaside are still sitting at #1 with "Big Sky". The race to be the first new #1 of 2026 is on, and Magdalena Bay are leading it at the moment with "This Is The World (I Made It For You)" up to #2. Stella Donnelly is also now up to #3, while 070 Shake has taken "Arms" to #4. With all that competition, something's gotta give, and Ampersounds are down to #5 with "Chasing Time". Karnivool climb into the top 10 this week, which is familiar territory. Now the 7th time they've done this, as "Opal" reaches #9.

NEW ENTRIES

I've been enjoying the sentiment I see where a relatively ignorant person of year end lists takes it as a launching point of discovery, rather than a point of mockery or self-deprication that I think we're all just sick of seeing at this point. Anyway, that Pitchfork list has got some interesting stuff on it, and I'm going to highlight "Play" by james K, which enters at #28.
On the other hand, I'm very familiar with the world of Cry Club at this point. If you're also aware, then it is very easy to say that "Retaliate" is another Cry Club song. It's working though, and new at #36.
It was brief, but Esha Tewari made her mark on the chart last year. She's a little late for me to say good things come in twos, but "In Twos" gets her a second at #38.

It was a "Big Sky" in December, it's still a "Big Sky" in January. Seaside hold onto that love for a 3rd week. Coming to threaten that stay is an artist who knows their way around the top spot, 070 Shake climbing up to #2 with "Arms". Magdalena Bay are bumped down a spot to #3, as is Stella Donnelly below them at #4. WAAX has been sitting on what has felt like a surefire smash caught in the wrong time frame, but "HANDS" has finally cracked the top 5 this week. Climbing into the top 10 is an artist that's extremely familiar with the process. Might be a fun time to say that Gyroscope now have 10 top 10 hits, with the added bonus that they've only had 10 entries.

NEW ENTRIES

Someone's gotta be first cab off the rack. I'm here to present my absolute favourite song of 2026 so far. It comes in the form of a return for alayna, who actually nearly scored an entry late last year with "Softly" but didn't quite go the distance. She's made up for it with "Animal", her first entry since 2023. It's new at #28 and is a 3rd entry to date.
Look I might just be unc. I've never really known what the verdict is on Bone Thugs-N-Harmony because they don't get talked about very often for a big '90s hip hop act that's still around. Maybe they are just a random act that's clinging onto relevancy off the back of having that one hit song. All I know is that I took to a newish song of theirs on "Over", so it's a first time appearance at #34.
Lastly I've done the Rihanna special, or The Weeknd special, or the Macklemore special. I dunno really, just that DJ Suzy is getting a quick second entry that actually predates the first one, and I did know it then too. It's just been a slower climb for "Silent War" to finally reach #37 this week.

It was just shy of 2 years ago when 070 Shake was last at #1. The uneven number of days in the year and my consistent schedule prevents these things from lining up fully more often. In any case, it was the 3rd new chart of the year in 2024. It's also the 3rd new chart of 2026 that sees 070 Shake return to the #1 spot, as "Arms" takes her and Jacob Mühlrad all the way. They replace Seaside who drop down to #2 with "Big Sky". hanbee has another hit on her hands with "lover girl!" up to #3, knocking Magdalena Bay to #4, while Karnivool see their way back into the top 5 with "Opal" now. Just one arrival in the top 10 and it's a first timer for Talia Perese with "Meant For Me" at #10.

NEW ENTRIES

Just a quiet one but it's a super fresh week. That's not out of any mandated refusal of 2025 entries, they just didn't quite get there this week. As we saw last year, January is a great opportunity for high debuts, and we're seeing it with the highest debut in nearly 12 months. It's the return of Mitski, and there was much rejoicing. She's putting up her 9th entry to date with "Where's My Phone?" at #15.
The only other debut this week might be seen as a kindred spirit. They've only charted once before, but when they did, they were sharing top 3 space with Mitski, the last time she charted as well. We'll have to see if they meet at the top again, as hemlocke springs scores a second ever entry with "w-w-w-w-w" at #32.

Busy today? Couldn't be me! I've taken the time out to say that "Arms" is #1 for a second week. hanbee is onto another big hit as "lover girl!" moves up to #2, swapping with Seaside who reside at #3. Karnivool climb up another spot to #4, and swap with Magdalena Bay, such are the riveting moments as we wait for 2026 to catch up. We do have a first time top 10 entrant though this week, with Vana's "Pray" at #10.

NEW ENTRIES

It doesn't feel like it, but it's actually been a little while since MAY-A was last on the chart, as her last entry was in late 2023. She's got to make up for lost time and that's how we get "Catching Up 2 U" at #24, her 8th entry to date.
The 2025 scraps do in fact continue, and I wish I had anything interesting to say about River Tiber, other than "Not The Same" not being a Bodyjar cover at #34.
I'm once again here to report that Matt Corby still puts out quality tunes. This one's a bit more abstract but still connects in the same typical way, as "Know It All" enters at #37. It's his 6th entry to date.
Always hard to keep up with because I can't be consistent in my databases to save my life. Nonetheless, I'm very confident when I say "Never Give Up On Loving You" is KUČKA's 12th entry to date at #39.

It's another week of 070 shaking them off. "Arms" is #1 for a 3rd week and heading up our regularly scheduled, every few months log jam at the top. hanbee still #2, Seaside still #3, Karnivool still #4, got that? Well, we're about to get even more millennial up in here because Gyroscope have jumped up to #5 with "My Broken Spine", just in case it didn't feel like the late 2000s enough. We're livening up the top 10 though, Mitski has the first 2026 song to break through with "Where's My Phone?" at #8. That's now her 6th top 10 hit. Doing it for the first time is Josef Scott, avoiding the fate of Topic on the ARIA Chart and getting "Home" to sneak in at #10.

NEW ENTRIES

I am now heading up the conspiracy that DZ Deathrays latest album was screwed over on the ARIA Chart, by way of their vinyl sales being attributed to the wrong album. Who knows how many more times that might have happened? Almost enough to distract you from the fact that, wait, DZ Deathrays are back on the chart? It's the first time since 2017 for them, but title track "Easing Out Of Control" does the job arriving at #29. It's their 4th entry to date.
Belated gratification arrives for Sarah Kinsley this week. A couple of years ago she was foisted with a very rough 3 weeks at #43 with "Oh No Darling!", but she's finally made it this time. It's "Lonely Touch" that breaks the ice at #32.
Actually, Sarah Kinsley isn't the only artist here who last charted at #43, because it was an unlucky time for Nessa Barrett who couldn't quite add to her rather startling collection of entries. No longer the case, and I can now say she's got 8 entries to date with "High On Heaven" coming in at #37.

Feb 8th

Sometimes you just gotta take that last gasp and take it all the way. On this week's chart there are only 6 2024 entries that are still climbing, and it feels likely that number will decrease next week if only because the first of those doesn't have any higher to go. Now I can finally say hanbee has her number too, I don't know what the pattern is here. Just that "lover girl!" is her 2nd #1 hit to date as it replaces "Arms" and that moves down to #2. I can't believe there's really a new Karnivool album, and from it, "Opal" is #3. Mitski continues to be a solo rep for 2026 in the top 10 as "Where's My Phone?" is now up to #4. Gyroscope hold steady at #5.

NEW ENTRIES

It's that time of the year where I newly discover a rock band and say 'wow, that rocks'. Sweet Pill are the ones getting the attention this time around, and "Slow Burn" enters at #20.
Next we've got some serious Bravery-core cosplay. The curiously named ALEXSUCKS has "Autopilot" at #27.
Lastly I'm out of words lately but Ella Red is not out of them, and arrives at #33 with "Funeral".

Feb 15th

It's been a month and we're still looking for that phone. Maybe solace can be taken for Mitski as "Where's My Phone?" climbs to #1 and ascends her to the fairly rare group of artists with 4 #1's to their name. She replaces hanbee at #2, while a new entry displaces 070 Shake to #4 and Karnivool to #5. hemlocke springs makes quick work of scoring a second ever top 10 hit, and DJ Suzy is doing it for the first time with "White Rabbit".

NEW ENTRIES

It might not be the greatest of days for Western Australia pride right now, but rest assured I will sacrifice a swan to make up for it. For now, let's talk about that very good new Karnivool album. I think it's very good. The opening track is one that I first heard last year, and now that it's properly out, it's been well worth the wait. "Ghost" enters at #3. It's simultaneously their 10th entry to date, and 8th top 10 to date. Oh and while we're at it, let's chuck in the 11th entry because "Animation" has finally decided to show after being released a couple weeks ago. That's in at #21.
The chill vibes will continue until morale improves. This next one is via a newcomer in Betterment, as "My Last Love" enters at #30.
We can go both ways of course, as we get a little bit louder with Softcult. They charted once a couple of years ago alongside Teen Jesus, but they're getting their first ever entry on their own as "Not Sorry" enters at #33.
Lastly, Julia Michaels replaces herself on the chart as she picks up a second entry courtesy of Danny L Harle. He's the relative veteran in this mix as he's picking up his 3rd entry, "Raft In The Sea" coming in at #36.
