TRIPLE J PREDICTIONS COMP

Hey! I hope you're all really excited for Hottest 100 happening this weekend! I'm running this little competition again this year, so if you're keen, feel free to join in! (This post will be mostly copy-pasted from last year's )

As with last year, I will use a "scale" points system where I will award maximum points if you predict a song in its correct place, and will subtract points depending on how far away your prediction is compared to its final position.

For example, #69 has 10 maximum points available. If you correctly guess #69, you are awarded the full 10 points. If you are 1 position away at #68 or #70, you are given 9 points. 8 points are given for #67 or #71 and the pattern continues until all available points are exhausted.

The points available will be as follows:
#200 - 20 points available
#150 - 20 points available
#101 - 15 points available
#100 - 15 points available
#69 - 10 points available
#50 - 10 points available
#10 to #6 - 5 points available each
#5 to #1 - 3 points available each


In addition to this, here is a quick quiz! (20 points available) Each question worth 1 point unless otherwise specified:

I have to say that overall I found 2025 to be a weak year to have solid standout new music however, in saying that I have actually been enjoying todays countdown which I honestly didn't think I would.

Sombr I have been a fan of and hope has a few entries rank well so am looking forward to the rest of the countdown.

I don't dislike the song at all and even though it looks like Olivia Dean will be the #1 song, I am hoping something else will take out the #1 spot. The #1's over the past few years all being by international female artists is starting to get boring and it doesn't do any of these songs any favours as they will likely be grouped together and labelled as the period that international female artists dominated rather than any of their songs getting the praise of being the #1 song of an annual countdown. Similar, to the 2010's when a number of local artists took out the #1 position and are often grouped together because they are Aussie and their song hadn't charted on the Aria charts and was not as popular or well known as other contenders from that year often being labelled as undeserving winners.

Depending on how high this reaches, there is a case to say that Keith is now arguably the most successful ska song in triple j history. Sure, it may not sound like much like the Specials but the influence is clearly there. And if there's a song in this list that more evokes Madness... well actually that leads to the other significant factor in the song's popularity.

In a move which can now only be described as marketing genius, Playlunch have furthered their previous attempts to evoke Australian nostalgia by recruiting their own Keith for the purposes of the video. The choice not only made perfect sense, but I suspect generated more publicity than all their previous music combined could ever have mustered.

Yes, the man as well-known for his acts of gratuitous violence as his goalkicking prowess is back again. In spite of his very public failings, there has always been a lot of love for big, bad, bustling Barry Hall. Hell, he even met the prime minister after she commented about being 'more likely to play full-forward for the Dogs' than assume said office. While he's also now been the figurehead of a national voting campaign, I doubt Barry will ever make it to the Lodge either.

As for the song itself, it really does lay on the Australiana very thick. Sure, there are local references ranging from a former TV host to 'speedies' and the Malvern TAB (side-note: if the video is to be believed, the TAB in question is actually in Malvern East, which makes more sense as it's closer to Hotham St). More striking though is the use of language from all the characters involved, which really does stand up to scrutiny if you've ever encountered their likes. To put it bluntly, if you were offended by the c-bombs from Doechii and Amyl and the Sniffers last year, hit mute before the first chorus.

In a countdown that really was agreeable at best, it really makes sense this took it out. Other than #2, there wasn't really anything I can argue too aggressively against. For top spot, Dracula would have been great but seemed like a long shot, again kind of amazed it was higher than both WIMH! and Keith. In essence, I didn't really think anything stood much of a chance but I really haven't tuned in much this year to be properly informed.
