Praise the Lorde.
I had been eagerly anticipating this, very different sound for her but this was absolutely worth the wait and then some! One of my favourites of the year!

Absolutely loving this new sound. Such a great song. Instantly likeable and catchy. My favourite song from her so far apart from 'Team'.

Solid return from Lorde!
****
Glad she is back but could be a better comeback. In comparison to her first album this is a let down.

Really like this one looking forward to see whats next (prediction to be the triple jjj's number #1 song of 2017

An unexpected sound, but decent.

The pre-chorus(?) is what draws me in otherwise I'm a bit hesitant on it. Glad she's changed things up though. A grower. 3.75

There are so many parts to like about this. It is so vibrant and exciting and each section of the song offers something different. A very interesting listen, and I'm happy this was such a hit. 5.5.

Chemmical summed up my thoughts perfectly.

Max Martin described “Green Light” as a case of “incorrect songwriting,” and frankly, I'm inclined to agree. Heck, even Lorde agreed with this assessment, saying in an interview with the New York Times Magazine that “it’s a strange piece of music...the drums don’t show up on the chorus until halfway through, which creates this other, bizarre part.”

It is one thing to push musical boundaries, and it is another to 'kind of not follow the rules' as a statement of pushing said boundaries. I feel Green Light sits squarely in the latter. During my first listen of this, all the way back at the start of the year, I recall thinking that Lorde indeed had taken some bold musical changes throughout this song, but they were nothing entirely new or convincing.
The key change from F# minor to A Major, the relative major key, isn't that spectacular (although it is approached unexpectedly) and that dancey piano-loop isn't entirely that new of a sound. The main hook, ("I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it") is polarising to say the least, and the use of those high pitch voices left me quite wanting.
The song then attempts to evolve into what I think is an uplifting dance anthem, of which it fails to achieve thanks to those obscure musical decisions. Is this song meant to be so great because my expectations have been subverted? And that it achieves what it wants to be without using those typical songwriting strategies? I'm more inclined to think that those "correct songwriting rules" are there for a reason, and it's because they work. Green Light is very close to the mark, but unfortunately it spectacularly misses it and falls flat.

Needless to say, I was and still am quite disappointed with this. Over time, the experience has marginally improved and I understand it to be a solid and cohesive work. However, the production still lacks enough oomph for me (especially for a dance song), and the song is too reliant on the vocal hook, leaving a lot to be desired from everything else. There were times where I was irritated this was successful, but there still is much worse out there. 2.5
